🔧 CX-5 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

You'll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct oil. This keeps your CX-5’s engine lubricated and helps prevent premature wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool 10-20 minutes; oil can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts and hot exhaust parts to avoid smoke/odor.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; used oil is a skin irritant.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum, pair)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10-80 ft-lb range)
  • Oil filter wrench (adjustable band type)
  • 8mm socket
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim clip remover (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Warm the engine 2-3 minutes, then shut it off and wait 10-20 minutes for oil to drain safely.
  • Open the hood and loosen the oil fill cap (this helps it drain faster).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the CX-5

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front center jacking point to lift the front.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum, pair) at the left and right front pinch welds.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Open the lower splash shield access

  • Slide your drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil pan area.
  • Remove the small service/access panel in the lower cover using an 8mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • If your cover uses clips, pop them out with a trim clip remover (specialty) (a clip remover is a small forked tool that lifts plastic fasteners without breaking them).

Step 3: Drain the old engine oil

  • Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan.
  • Use a 17mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish unthreading it by hand.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new drain plug crush washer.

Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (10-80 ft-lb range) with a 17mm socket to tighten the plug.
  • Torque to 30-41 Nm (22-30 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean to spot leaks.

Step 5: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil filter (it will spill when loosened).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (adjustable band type) to break the filter loose, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the filter (if it sticks to the engine, peel it off by hand).

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Put a small dab of new oil on your finger and lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn.
  • If you choose to torque it, use a torque wrench (10-80 ft-lb range) and appropriate adapter with your oil filter wrench (adjustable band type): Torque to 12-16 Nm (9-12 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield access panel

  • Reinstall the access panel using the 8mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • If clips were removed, push them back in by hand (use the trim clip remover (specialty) only if needed to align them).

Step 8: Refill with new engine oil

  • Lower the CX-5 off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum, pair) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Place a funnel in the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in about 4.5 quarts first, then pause.
  • Final fill target is typically about 4.8 quarts total with filter change, but always confirm by dipstick.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.

Step 9: Start, check for leaks, and set the oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle 30-60 seconds.
  • Turn the engine off and wait 5 minutes for the oil to settle.
  • Check underneath for leaks around the drain plug and oil filter (use shop towels to wipe and re-check).
  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop towels, reinsert, then recheck level. Top off slowly as needed using the funnel.

Step 10: Reset the oil maintenance reminder

  • On the center screen, try: Applications > Vehicle Status Monitor > Maintenance > Oil Change > Reset.
  • If your menu looks different, try: Information > Vehicle Status Monitor > Maintenance Details > Oil Change > Reset.
  • If it still won’t reset, tell me what you see on the screen and I’ll guide you.

✅ After Repair

  • Take a short 5-10 minute drive, then re-check for leaks and verify the dipstick level one more time.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center/auto parts store that accepts used oil.
  • Wipe any spilled oil off the splash shield to prevent burning smells.
