🔧 Corolla - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter element, and refill with fresh oil. This keeps your engine lubricated, reduces wear, and helps prevent sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool 20–30 minutes; hot oil can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Never get under a car supported only by a jack—use jack stands.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; oil can irritate skin and eyes.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts/exhaust; wipe spills immediately.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–80 ft-lbs range)
  • 10mm socket
  • Flat trim clip remover
  • 64mm 14-flute oil filter cap socket (specialty)
  • Small pick tool
  • Oil drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Oil filter element kit (cartridge-style) - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug crush washer/gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off.
  • 🧰 Park on level ground, set parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🧰 Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap to help oil drain faster.
  • 🧰 If you lift the front, place jack stands under the proper front support points before going underneath.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and access the oil service panel

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Corolla.
  • Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under the front support points and lower the car onto them.
  • Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
  • Under the front bumper area, remove the small service cover/undercover (if equipped) using a 10mm socket and flat trim clip remover.

Step 2: Drain the old engine oil

  • Place the oil drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug (if stuck, use a small pick tool carefully).

Step 3: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer

  • Install the new drain plug crush washer/gasket on the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 3/8" drive torque wrench with a 14mm socket and Torque to 37 Nm (27 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean with shop towels.

Step 4: Remove the oil filter housing cap

  • Move the oil drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil filter housing (front/low on the engine).
  • Use the 64mm 14-flute oil filter cap socket (specialty) on a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the housing cap.
  • An oil filter cap socket grips the plastic housing.
  • Lower the housing cap slowly—some oil will spill out.

Step 5: Replace the filter element and O-ring(s)

  • Pull out the old filter element from the housing cap by hand.
  • Use a small pick tool to remove the old large O-ring from the housing cap groove.
  • Lightly coat the new O-ring with fresh oil (use a little from the new oil bottle) and install it in the correct groove.
  • Install the new filter element into the housing.
  • Wipe mating surfaces with shop towels.

Step 6: Reinstall and torque the filter housing

  • Thread the housing cap in by hand until it seats.
  • Use the 64mm 14-flute oil filter cap socket (specialty) with a 3/8" drive torque wrench and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe off any spilled oil using shop towels.

Step 7: Reinstall the under cover/service panel

  • Reinstall the service cover using the 10mm socket and any clips with the flat trim clip remover.
  • Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum), remove jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum), then lower the car.

Step 8: Refill with new oil

  • Place a funnel in the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
  • Pour in about 4.4 US qt (4.2 L) of SAE 0W-20 full synthetic.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.

Step 9: Start, check for leaks, and verify oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle 30–60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to settle.
  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop towels, reinsert fully, then check the level.
  • Add oil slowly (small amounts) if needed to reach the full mark.
  • Look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter housing.

Step 10: Reset the maintenance reminder (if the light is on)

  • Turn the key to ON (engine off).
  • Use the trip button to display ODO (not Trip A/Trip B).
  • Turn the key OFF.
  • Press and hold the trip reset button, then turn the key back to ON while still holding it.
  • Keep holding until the display shows the reset/zeros, then release.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Recheck the dipstick after your first short drive; top off if needed.
  • ✅ Verify there are no drips under the engine the next morning.
  • ✅ Pour used oil into a sealed container and take it to a recycling center/parts store that accepts used oil.
