🔧 Focus - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

On your Focus, you’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter element, then refill with the correct 5W-20 oil. This keeps internal engine parts lubricated and helps prevent wear, sludge, and overheating.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on level ground and support the car with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🔥 Engine oil can be hot. Let the engine cool 15–30 minutes to avoid burns.
  • 🧯 Keep oil away from exhaust parts and clean spills immediately (slip/fire risk).
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (pair, rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Drain pan (8-quart minimum)
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10–50 Nm range)
  • 27mm socket
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (5W-20, meeting Ford WSS-M2C945-A) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter (cartridge/filter element) - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter housing O-ring(s) (usually included with filter) - Qty: 1 set
  • Oil drain plug gasket/washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🛠️ Warm the engine 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • 📍 Open the hood and loosen/remove the oil filler cap to help the crankcase vent while draining.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the front of the car

  • Use floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands (pair, rated 2-ton minimum) at the approved front support points and gently lower the car onto them.
  • Give the car a small push to confirm it’s stable before you go underneath.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip tool and flathead screwdriver to remove the plastic push clips/screws holding the lower engine cover.
  • Set the clips aside so you don’t lose them.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Position the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 15mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (typically 5–10 minutes).
  • Wipe the drain plug area with shop rags.

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Install a new oil drain plug gasket/washer on the plug (if separate).
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (10–50 Nm range) with a 15mm socket and Torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Replace the oil filter element

  • Find the oil filter housing in the engine bay (a plastic cap-style housing).
  • Use a 27mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the filter cap slowly.
  • Pull out the old filter element and let it drip into the drain pan.
  • Remove the old O-ring(s) from the cap using your fingers (avoid scratching the plastic).
  • Install the new O-ring(s) (lightly coat them with fresh oil using a gloved finger). This prevents pinching and leaks.
  • Push the new filter element into place (it snaps/presses onto the cap on most designs).
  • Reinstall the cap by hand, then use the torque wrench (10–50 Nm range) with the 27mm socket and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • O-ring = a rubber sealing ring.

Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield

  • Reposition the shield and reinstall fasteners using the trim clip tool and flathead screwdriver.

Step 7: Refill with new engine oil

  • Lower the car from the stands using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in 5.5 quarts of 5W-20 first (don’t dump all 6 quarts immediately).
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap.

Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and verify level

  • Start the engine and let it idle 30–60 seconds.
  • Turn the engine off and wait 3–5 minutes for oil to drain back to the pan.
  • Check underneath for leaks around the drain plug and filter housing.
  • Check the dipstick and top off as needed (typically ends up around 5.7 quarts total with filter).
  • Use shop rags to wipe any spilled oil.

Step 9: Reset the oil life monitor

  • Turn ignition ON (engine OFF).
  • Use the steering wheel buttons to navigate: Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset
  • Select and hold OK to reset to 100%.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔎 Recheck the dipstick the next morning (cold engine) and adjust if needed.
  • 🧼 Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center/auto parts store—don’t dump it.
  • 🛣️ Take a short test drive, then look again for any fresh drips under the engine.
