🔧 Forester - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct oil. This keeps your engine lubricated and helps prevent wear and sludge buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔥 Let the engine cool 15-30 minutes so oil isn’t scalding hot.
- 🛑 Support the vehicle with jack stands or ramps; never rely on a jack alone.
- 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; used oil can irritate skin and eyes.
- 🔒 Chock the rear wheels and keep the shifter in Park with the parking brake set.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (8-quart minimum)
- Funnel
- 17mm socket
- 12mm socket
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- Torque wrench (3/8" drive)
- Trim clip remover tool
- Shop towels
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Gather everything first—once the drain plug is out, it moves quickly.
- Crush washer = a soft metal washer that seals the drain plug; replace it to prevent leaks.
- Torque wrench = a wrench that tightens bolts to an exact spec so you don’t strip threads.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the front of your Forester
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front jack point.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and keep wheel chocks in place.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (under cover)
- Use a 12mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the under-cover bolts.
- Use a trim clip remover tool to pop out any plastic clips.
- Set the shield and hardware aside where you won’t lose them.
Step 3: Open the oil fill cap (helps draining)
- Open the hood.
- Remove the oil fill cap by hand.
- Pull the dipstick out slightly to vent the crankcase.
Step 4: Drain the engine oil
- Place the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 17mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer
- Wipe the drain plug and oil pan sealing surface with shop towels.
- Install the new oil drain plug crush washer onto the drain plug.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
- Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) with a 17mm socket: Torque to 42 N·m (31 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Replace the oil filter (top-mounted)
- Locate the oil filter on top of the engine.
- Place shop towels around the filter area to catch drips.
- Remove the old filter by hand (turn counterclockwise).
- Wipe the sealing surface clean with shop towels.
- Lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket with fresh oil (use a finger).
- Install the new filter by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten by hand.
- If using a torque wrench (3/8" drive) with the correct adapter, tighten the filter to 12.5 N·m (9.2 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield
- Reposition the shield.
- Use the trim clip remover tool to align clips, then press them in by hand.
- Use a 12mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to reinstall the bolts snugly.
Step 8: Refill with new oil
- Lower the vehicle safely from the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Pour in about 5.0 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic, then reinstall the oil fill cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed (typical total is about 5.1 quarts with filter).
✅ After Repair
- Check for leaks around the drain plug and the oil filter with a flashlight and shop towels.
- Recheck the dipstick level after a short 5-10 minute drive.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center/parts store.
- Reset the maintenance reminder (two common paths):
- Use the center display: Home > Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance (reset Engine Oil).
- Or use the gauge cluster menus: Settings > Maintenance (reset Engine Oil).
