🔧 Escape - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

This service drains old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills with fresh oil so your Escape’s turbo engine stays properly lubricated and cooled. The only “gotchas” are safe lifting and making sure you use the exact oil spec listed on your oil cap/owner’s manual.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and support the Escape with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Engine oil can be very hot; let the engine cool 15–30 minutes if it was just driven.
  • ⚠️ Keep the ignition OFF and the key/fob away from the vehicle so it can’t auto-start while you’re under it.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; used oil is a skin irritant.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Metric socket set (8mm–19mm)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive)
  • Oil filter wrench (cap-style or band-style)
  • Trim clip remover
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (viscosity/spec shown on your oil cap/owner’s manual) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug sealing washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧭 Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • 🛢️ Confirm the exact oil viscosity/spec by reading the oil cap and/or owner’s manual (for example, some Fords call for a specific 0W-20 or 5W-20 spec).
  • 🔎 Look under the front of the Escape and note whether there’s a lower splash shield/undertray blocking access to the drain plug and filter.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for an oil change.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm the oil slightly (optional but helpful)

  • Start the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off (warm oil drains faster).
  • Let it sit 10–15 minutes so the oil isn’t dangerously hot.

Step 2: Lift and secure the front of the Escape

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift at the proper front jacking point.
  • Set the Escape onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and gently shake the vehicle to confirm it’s stable.

Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Position your drain pan (at least 8-quart) nearby to catch any drips.
  • Use a metric socket set (8mm–19mm) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove any shield screws/bolts.
  • Use a trim clip remover to pop out plastic push-clips (a trim clip remover is a forked tool that pries clips out without breaking them).
  • Set the shield and hardware aside in order. Lay bolts in a pattern to remember.

Step 4: Drain the engine oil

  • Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine (this helps it drain faster).
  • Place the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use the correctly sized socket from your metric socket set (8mm–19mm) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).

Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer

  • Remove the old sealing washer from the drain plug (if it didn’t come off already).
  • Install the new oil drain plug sealing washer.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) to tighten the drain plug to the factory specification for your Escape. Do not overtighten the oil pan.

Step 6: Remove and replace the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil filter area (it will spill).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (cap-style or band-style) to loosen the old filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Wipe the filter mounting surface with shop towels.
  • Confirm the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter (a stuck gasket can cause a big leak).
  • Put a light film of new oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket.
  • Install the new filter by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten by hand per the filter’s instructions (commonly “gasket contact + 3/4 turn”).

Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield (if removed)

  • Reposition the shield.
  • Reinstall bolts/screws using the metric socket set (8mm–19mm) and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Reinstall any push-clips with the trim clip remover as needed.

Step 8: Refill with oil and check level

  • Lower the Escape off the jack stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Insert a funnel and add about 5 quarts first.
  • Wait 1 minute, then check the dipstick, and top off gradually until it reaches the correct range.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.

Step 9: Start, inspect for leaks, then recheck level

  • Start the engine and let it idle 30–60 seconds.
  • Shut it off and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • Wait 5 minutes, then recheck the dipstick and adjust the level if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧾 Reset the oil life monitor on the Escape’s instrument cluster: Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset then press and hold OK to reset.
  • 🧪 Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil-recycling center or auto parts store that accepts waste oil.
  • 🔍 Over the next 1–2 days, check your driveway and recheck the dipstick once.

Quick check (so I can tailor this perfectly):

  • ❓ Does your Escape have a large lower plastic undertray you must remove to reach the drain plug/filter?
  • ❓ What oil viscosity/spec is printed on your oil cap (for example 0W-20 or 5W-20)?
