🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (5W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Focus on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap by hand to help the oil drain smoothly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front of the car
- Lift the front of your Focus using a floor jack at the correct front jacking point.
- Set it down securely on jack stands.
- Give the car a small shake to confirm it’s stable before you go underneath.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Under the engine, remove the splash shield fasteners using an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet.
- If any plastic clips are present, pop them out with a flat trim tool.
- Set the shield and hardware aside so you don’t lose anything.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Place your drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Remove the drain plug using a 15mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
- Clean the drain plug and install a new oil drain plug gasket.
Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten with a torque wrench (10-100 Nm range): Torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten—oil pans strip easily.
Step 5: Remove and replace the oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the oil filter area (it will spill a little).
- Loosen the old filter using an oil filter wrench, then spin it off by hand.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the old filter (it can stick to the engine).
- Put a light film of new oil on the new filter gasket using a gloved finger.
- Install the new filter by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn.
Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield
- Reinstall the shield using the 8mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Reinstall any clips using the flat trim tool to seat them.
Step 7: Refill the engine with oil
- Lower the car off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Add engine oil (5W-20 full synthetic), starting with about 4.5 quarts.
- Reinstall the oil filler cap by hand.
Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and set the level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed to reach the full mark.
- Wipe spilled oil with shop rags.
✅ After Repair
- Recheck for leaks after a short 5-10 minute drive.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling drop-off (many auto parts stores accept it).
- If your Focus has an oil life reminder, reset it using the instrument cluster controls (message center).
