🔧 F-350 Super Duty - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

This job drains the old engine oil and replaces the oil filter so your engine stays lubricated and protected. Fresh oil helps reduce wear, keeps oil pressure stable, and prevents sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Stock oil filter setup (common filter: FL-820-S equivalent).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Hot oil can burn you—let the engine cool 10-20 minutes before draining.
  • If you raise the truck, support it with jack stands—never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Wear gloves and safety glasses; oil will run down your arm when the filter loosens.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Drain pan (12-quart minimum)
  • 16mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)
  • Oil filter wrench (cap or band type)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (SAE 5W-20 meeting Ford spec) - Qty: 7 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug gasket (if equipped/separate) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • If you need more room, lift the front with a floor jack and support with jack stands.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the oil fill cap and set up the drain pan

  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand.
  • Place your drain pan (12-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.

Step 2: Drain the engine oil

  • Use a 16mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
  • Finish removing the drain plug by hand and let the oil drain fully (typically 5-10 minutes).
  • Wipe the drain plug clean with shop rags.
  • If your plug uses a replaceable sealing washer/gasket, install the new one now.

Step 3: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (this prevents cross-threading).
  • Use a torque wrench and 16mm socket: Torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
  • Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter.
  • Spin the filter off by hand and keep it upright as you remove it.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket (seal) did not stick to the engine. (The gasket is the rubber ring on the filter.)

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket with fresh oil (use a drop of new oil on your finger).
  • Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
  • Tighten the filter by hand an additional 3/4 turn. Hand-tight only.

Step 6: Refill with new engine oil

  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in 6.5 quarts first.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.

Step 7: Start, check for leaks, and set the final oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed to reach the full mark (typically ends up near 7 quarts total).

Step 8: Reset the oil life monitor

  • Turn the key to ON (engine off).
  • Use the steering wheel controls to navigate the driver display: Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset.
  • Press and hold OK to reset to 100%.

âś… After Repair

  • Recheck for leaks after your first short drive.
  • Recheck the dipstick level on level ground and top off if needed.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center or parts store that accepts waste oil.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$220 (parts + labor)
