🔧 Frontier - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct oil. Fresh oil protects your engine from wear and helps it run smoother and cooler.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool 10-20 minutes; oil can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the truck with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off the exhaust and belts; wipe spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) - Qty: 2
  • Wheel chocks - Qty: 2
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension (3"-6")
  • 14mm socket
  • Torque wrench (10-80 ft-lb range)
  • Oil filter wrench (cap or band type)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (SAE 5W-30) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug crush washer (oil drain gasket) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Frontier on a level surface, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap by hand (this helps oil drain).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and safely support the front end

  • Position the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front jacking point and raise the front.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame rails and lower the truck onto them.
  • Give the truck a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.

Step 2: Drain the old engine oil

  • Slide the drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new drain plug crush washer (oil drain gasket).

Step 3: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (to avoid cross-threading).
  • Use a torque wrench (10-80 ft-lb range) with a 14mm socket to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean using shop rags.

Step 4: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity) under the oil filter area (it will spill).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (cap or band type) to loosen the oil filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket (seal) came off with the filter. If it’s stuck to the engine, peel it off with your fingers and wipe the sealing surface with shop rags.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Lightly dip a clean finger into new oil and coat the new filter’s rubber gasket (this helps it seal).
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the engine, then tighten it an additional 2/3 to 1 turn by hand.
  • If you prefer a torque spec and your filter/wrench setup allows it, use a torque wrench (10-80 ft-lb range) with your oil filter wrench (cap or band type): Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Refill with new engine oil

  • Lower the truck off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole.
  • Pour in 5.1-5.4 quarts of SAE 5W-30 (start with 5.1 qt, then top off after checking).
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap by hand.

Step 7: Start, check for leaks, and set the final oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 2-3 minutes for oil to drain back into the pan.
  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop rags, reinsert fully, then check level again.
  • Add oil in small amounts (a little at a time) using the funnel until the level is at the full mark.
  • Look underneath for any seepage at the drain plug and oil filter.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck for leaks after your first short drive (5-10 minutes).
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center or parts store (most accept it for free).
  • If your Frontier shows an oil service reminder, reset it in the gauge cluster menu (common path): Settings > Maintenance > Oil Control > Reset.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $90-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $35-$70 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$90 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
