🔧 Passport - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

On your Passport, an oil change replaces old engine oil and the spin-on oil filter so the V6 stays properly lubricated and protected. This is routine maintenance and also helps prevent sludge, oil pressure issues, and premature engine wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack; always use jack stands or drive-on ramps.
  • 🛑 Engine oil can be hot; let the engine cool 10-20 minutes if fully warmed up.
  • 🛑 Keep oil off the serpentine belt and exhaust; it can smoke and smell.
  • 🛑 Use wheel chocks and keep the shifter in Park.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • Oil filter wrench (adjustable band type)
  • 10mm socket
  • Trim clip remover (panel popper)
  • Drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity)
  • Funnel
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Engine oil filter (spin-on) - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🔎 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • 🔎 Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off; this helps oil drain faster.
  • 🔎 If you lift the front, raise only at the approved front center jack point and support with jack stands at the pinch weld points.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the drain plug and oil filter

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Lift the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • If your Passport has a lower splash shield/service cover, remove the access panel using a 10mm socket and trim clip remover (panel popper). (A trim clip remover is a small pry tool that pops plastic fasteners out without breaking them.)
  • Position the drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity) under the oil pan drain bolt.

Step 2: Drain the engine oil

  • Loosen the drain bolt using a 17mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Finish removing the bolt by hand and let the oil drain fully into the pan (typically 5-10 minutes).
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain bolt and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.
  • Reinstall the drain bolt by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten with a 3/8" torque wrench: Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Replace the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter (some oil will spill).
  • Loosen the filter with an oil filter wrench (adjustable band type), then spin it off by hand.
  • Wipe the engine’s filter mounting surface with shop towels and confirm the old rubber gasket is not stuck to the engine.
  • Lightly oil the new filter’s rubber gasket with fresh 0W-20 (use a finger).
  • Install the new filter by hand until the gasket contacts the base, then tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn. Hand-tight is usually enough.

Step 4: Reinstall the access panel (if equipped)

  • Reinstall the splash shield/service cover using the 10mm socket and any clips removed with the trim clip remover (panel popper).

Step 5: Refill with new oil and verify level

  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine and place a funnel in the fill hole.
  • Pour in 5.4 L (5.7 US qt) of 0W-20 full synthetic.
  • Reinstall the oil cap.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds, then shut it off.
  • Wait 2 minutes, then check the dipstick, wiping it with shop towels and rechecking until you get a clean reading.
  • If needed, top off in small amounts to reach the full mark (do not overfill).

Step 6: Reset the Maintenance Minder (oil life)

  • With the ignition ON (engine off), use the steering wheel controls to reach the maintenance screen.
  • Use one of these common paths (depending on display version): Home > Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance Info > Reset or Settings > Vehicle Settings > Maintenance Reset.
  • Confirm the reset when prompted.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Inspect for leaks around the drain bolt and oil filter with the engine running for 30 seconds.
  • 🧪 Recheck the oil level after a short 5-10 minute drive and top off if needed.
  • 🧪 Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a local recycling/auto parts facility in Panipat (most accept waste oil).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹3,500-₹7,500 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹2,200-₹5,000 (parts only)

You Save: ₹1,300-₹2,500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹1,000-₹2,500/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
