How to Change Engine Oil & Oil Filter on a 2020 Toyota GR Supra (0W-20 DIY Guide)
Step-by-step oil change instructions with tools, parts list, oil capacity, torque specs, and reset tips
🔧 Supra - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
On your Supra, an oil change means draining the old engine oil, replacing the cartridge-style oil filter, and refilling with the correct spec oil. This keeps the turbocharged engine properly lubricated and helps prevent premature wear and sludge.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the car with jack stands before going underneath.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be very hot; let the engine cool 15–30 minutes to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts/exhaust; spilled oil can smoke and smell on startup.
- ⚠️ Do not rely on the jack alone—use jack stands at the factory lift points.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, correct specification for your Supra) - Qty: 7 quarts
- Oil filter kit (cartridge filter + O-rings) - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Warm the engine for 3–5 minutes, then shut it off and let it cool 15–30 minutes.
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap to help the oil drain faster.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and support the front of the car
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise the front of the car.
- Set the car down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper lift points.
- Give the car a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before you go underneath.
Step 2: Remove the lower engine under cover
- Position your drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the engine area.
- Use an 8mm socket and 10mm socket with a ratchet (3/8" drive) to remove the under cover fasteners.
- Set the fasteners aside in a small pile so none go missing.
Step 3: Drain the old engine oil
- Place the drain pan (10-quart minimum) directly under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 17mm socket with a ratchet (3/8" drive) to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 10–20 minutes).
- Remove the old crush washer and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.
- Reinstall the drain plug by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench (10–60 Nm range): Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Hand-start threads to avoid cross-threading.
Step 4: Replace the oil filter (cartridge type)
- Locate the oil filter housing at the top of the engine.
- Use an 86mm 16-flute oil filter cap socket to loosen the housing cap. (This is a cup-style socket made to fit the filter cap.)
- Lift the cap and filter out carefully, keeping it upright to avoid spills.
- Pull the old cartridge filter off the cap by hand.
- Use a pick tool to remove the old O-ring(s) from the cap, then install the new O-ring(s) from the oil filter kit.
- Wipe the housing sealing surface with shop rags.
- Install the new cartridge onto the cap, then thread the cap back in by hand.
- Tighten with a torque wrench (10–60 Nm range) and 86mm 16-flute oil filter cap socket: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Reinstall the under cover
- Reposition the under cover.
- Use the 8mm socket and 10mm socket with a ratchet (3/8" drive) to reinstall the fasteners snugly.
Step 6: Refill with new oil
- Lower the car back to level ground using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Pour in about 6.5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic to start.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 7: Start, check for leaks, and set final oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug area and around the filter housing.
- Top off slowly as needed (most Supra oil changes land around ~6.5–7.0 quarts total depending on drain time).
- Use the car’s electronic oil level check in iDrive: CAR > Vehicle status > Engine oil level (follow the on-screen prompts; vehicle must be level and at operating temperature).
- Add oil in small amounts; it’s easy to overfill.
✅ After Repair
- Recheck for drips after a short 5–10 minute drive.
- Confirm the oil level again using CAR > Vehicle status > Engine oil level.
- Reset the oil service reminder if it’s due: CAR > Vehicle status > Service requirements > Engine oil > Reset.
- Dispose of used oil and the filter properly (most parts stores accept used oil).
