🔧 CX-30 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct fresh oil. This keeps your CX-30’s engine lubricated and helps prevent wear and sludge buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and support the CX-30 with jack stands before going underneath.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be hot; let the engine cool 15–30 minutes if it’s fully warmed up.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; oil can irritate skin and eyes.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts and exhaust parts to avoid smoke/burning smell.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer/gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your CX-30 on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Run the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off (this helps the oil drain better without being dangerously hot).
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap (this helps the crankcase vent while draining).
- Lay out your drain pan, new filter, and new crush washer so you’re not searching while oil is draining.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front of the CX-30
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front lifting point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper support points and lower onto them.
- Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.
Step 2: Remove the lower under cover / access panel
- Position the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the engine area first (some oil can drip while you work).
- Use an 8mm socket and 10mm socket to remove any small bolts holding the front under cover/access panel.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver and trim clip removal tool to remove plastic clips. Clips break easily—pry gently.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Slide the drain pan (at least 8-quart) directly under the oil drain plug.
- Use a ratchet with a 17mm socket to loosen the drain plug, then finish removing it by hand.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (typically 5–10 minutes).
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer
- Remove the old washer from the drain plug and install the new oil drain plug crush washer/gasket.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
- Use a torque wrench (10–80 Nm range) with a 17mm socket to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 30–41 Nm (22–30 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Remove the old oil filter
- Move the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil filter area (more oil will spill here).
- Use an oil filter wrench (cup or band style) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
- Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter (a stuck gasket can cause a leak).
Step 6: Install the new oil filter
- Dip a gloved finger in fresh oil and lightly oil the new filter’s rubber gasket.
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the engine, then tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn.
- Hand-tight is correct; don’t over-tighten.
Step 7: Reinstall the under cover / access panel
- Reposition the cover and start bolts by hand.
- Use an 8mm socket, 10mm socket, Phillips screwdriver, and trim clip removal tool to reinstall all fasteners.
Step 8: Refill with fresh engine oil
- Lower the CX-30 off the stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole.
- Pour in 0W-20 full synthetic, starting with about 4.5 quarts, then add as needed.
- Total fill (with filter change) is typically about 4.8 quarts; confirm final level by dipstick, not just the bottle amount.
- Use shop towels to wipe any spilled oil.
Step 9: Start, check for leaks, and verify the oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 3–5 minutes for oil to settle.
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop towels, reinsert, then re-check level and top off using the funnel if needed.
- Look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
✅ After Repair
- Recheck for drips after your first short drive.
- Reset the oil maintenance reminder on the Mazda display:
- Use the commander knob to go to Information > Vehicle Status Monitor > Maintenance Details > Oil Change > Reset
- If your menu looks different, try: Applications > Vehicle Status Monitor > Maintenance > Oil Change > Reset
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center/auto parts store (do not pour it out).
