🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1 approved) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug sealing gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🧰 Warm the engine 2–3 minutes, then shut it off (warm oil drains faster).
- 🧱 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- ⬆️ Lift the front with a floor jack and support with jack stands at the proper lift points.
- 🧾 If your Blazer has an underbody splash shield, be ready to remove its access panel.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the oil fill cap and prep for draining
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand (this helps oil drain smoother).
- Place your drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
Step 2: Remove the splash shield access (if equipped)
- Use a flat trim tool to release any plastic clips, and use the 3/8" drive ratchet with the correct fastener socket if bolts are present.
- Move the panel aside so you can access the oil pan drain plug and filter area.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
- Wipe the drain plug clean with shop rags.
- Replace the drain plug sealing gasket if your plug uses one.
Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) with a 15mm socket to tighten the drain plug.
- Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)
Step 5: Replace the oil filter (choose the version that matches what you see)
- Version A: Spin-on canister filter (metal can)
- Use an oil filter wrench (cap or strap type) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter (a stuck gasket can cause a bad leak).
- Put a light film of new oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
- Install the new filter by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand. Don’t use a wrench to tighten.
- Version B: Cartridge filter in a housing (plastic cap)
- Place the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the housing area (it will spill).
- Use a 24mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the filter housing cap, then remove it by hand.
- Remove the old paper filter from the cap and install the new filter.
- Replace the housing cap O-ring if your filter kit includes one (lightly oil the new O-ring before installing).
- Reinstall the cap and tighten with the 24mm socket and torque wrench (3/8" drive) to the spec supplied with the filter kit/service information (caps vary by housing style).
Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield access (if removed)
- Reposition the panel and reinstall clips using the flat trim tool.
- Reinstall any bolts using the 3/8" drive ratchet and the correct socket.
Step 7: Refill with new oil
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole.
- Pour in 0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1 approved. Start with about 5.5 quarts, then top off as needed.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and verify the oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and look underneath with a light for leaks at the drain plug and filter.
- Wait 3–5 minutes, then check the dipstick and add oil as needed to reach the full mark.
- Wipe any spilled oil with shop rags.
Step 9: Reset the Oil Life Monitor
- Turn ignition on (engine off).
- Use the steering wheel controls to display the Oil Life page in the Driver Information Center.
- Press and hold SET/CLR until it resets to 100%.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Recheck the oil level after your first short drive and top off if needed.
- 🕵️ Confirm there are no drips under the drain plug or filter the next morning.
- 🧾 Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil-recycling location.
