🔧 Tiguan - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter (cartridge-style on your Tiguan), then refill with the correct VW-approved oil. This keeps the turbo engine protected and helps prevent sludge and timing/turbo wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack; use jack stands.
  • 🔥 Oil and exhaust parts can be hot; let the engine cool 10–20 minutes.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; hot oil can burn.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off rubber hoses/belts and clean spills immediately.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Torx T30 screwdriver
  • Ratchet
  • 6" extension
  • 32mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • Torx T45 bit
  • Torque wrench (10–60 Nm range)
  • Oil drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip tool
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (VW-approved spec for your Tiguan) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter cartridge - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter housing O-ring set - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug (one-time-use) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Lift the front using a floor jack and support with jack stands at the factory lift points.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower engine cover (belly pan)

  • Use a Torx T25 screwdriver and Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the belly pan screws.
  • If clips are present, release them with a trim clip tool.
  • Set the belly pan aside where it won’t get oily.

Step 2: Drain the engine oil

  • Place an oil drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Remove the drain plug using either a 19mm socket or a Torx T45 bit (your Tiguan may use one or the other).
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
  • Wipe the drain area with shop towels.

Step 3: Install the new drain plug

  • Install the new drain plug by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten using a torque wrench: Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
  • If it doesn’t thread smoothly, stop and re-align.

Step 4: Remove the oil filter cartridge (top of engine)

  • Open the hood and locate the oil filter housing cap on top of the engine.
  • Place shop towels around the housing to catch drips.
  • Use a 32mm socket, ratchet, and 6" extension to loosen the housing cap.
  • Lift the cap and attached filter straight up, then let it drip into the housing.

Step 5: Replace the filter and O-ring

  • Pull the old filter off the cap by hand.
  • Remove the old O-ring from the cap using a trim clip tool carefully (don’t scratch the plastic).
  • Install the new O-ring in the same groove location.
  • Wipe the cap and housing sealing surfaces with shop towels.
  • Lightly coat the new O-ring with a dab of fresh engine oil (use your gloved finger).

Step 6: Reinstall and torque the oil filter housing cap

  • Insert the new filter into the housing, then thread the cap in by hand.
  • Tighten using a torque wrench and 32mm socket: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the belly pan

  • Position the belly pan and start all screws by hand.
  • Tighten the screws using a Torx T25 screwdriver and Torx T30 screwdriver (snug; do not overtighten).

Step 8: Refill with fresh oil

  • Remove the oil fill cap and insert a funnel.
  • Add about 5.0 quarts first.
  • Reinstall the oil cap.

Step 9: Start, check leaks, and set the oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 2–3 minutes.
  • Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and around the oil filter housing.
  • Top off as needed:
    • If equipped with a dipstick, check it and add oil in small amounts.
    • If using the vehicle display, check oil level via CAR > Vehicle > Vehicle status > Oil level (menu wording can vary).

Step 10: Reset the oil change reminder

  • Instrument cluster method:
    • Turn ignition OFF.
    • Press and hold the 0.0/SET button on the cluster.
    • While holding it, turn ignition ON (engine off).
    • Release the button, then confirm the reset using the steering wheel OK button if prompted.
  • Infotainment method (if available): CAR > Settings > Service > Reset oil change interval

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck for leaks after a short 5–10 minute drive.
  • Verify the oil level again and top off if needed (add in small amounts).
  • Dispose of used oil and the filter at an oil recycling location (most auto parts stores accept it).
