🔧 Land Cruiser - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
This service drains old engine oil, replaces the oil filter element, and refills with fresh oil. Clean oil protects your V8 from wear and helps it run cooler and smoother.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and use jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be very hot; let the engine cool 15–30 minutes before draining.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts/exhaust to prevent smoke and smells.
- ⚠️ Dispose of used oil and the filter properly (most parts stores accept it).

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 8 quarts
- Engine oil filter element (cartridge style) - Qty: 1
- Oil filter housing O-ring set - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park the Land Cruiser on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. This helps the oil drain faster.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Raise the front with a floor jack and support it with jack stands under the frame.
- Lay cardboard down to catch drips.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the front skid plate access (if equipped)
- Position your drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the engine area.
- Use a 12mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and 3/8" drive extension (6") to remove the skid plate bolts that block access to the drain plug and oil filter housing.
- Set the bolts aside where they won’t get lost.
Step 2: Drain the engine oil
- Move the drain pan (10-quart minimum) directly under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
- Install a new oil drain plug gasket (crush washer) on the drain plug.
- Reinstall the drain plug and tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Remove the oil filter element (cartridge housing)
- Move the drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil filter housing.
- Use the oil filter housing cap wrench 64mm 14-flute (specialty) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the filter housing cap.
- Slowly unthread it by hand and lower it carefully—oil will spill out.
- Remove the old filter element from the housing and wipe the housing clean using shop rags.
Step 4: Replace the housing O-ring(s) and reinstall the housing
- Use the small pick tool (specialty) to remove the old O-ring(s) from the housing grooves. (A pick is a small hooked tool for lifting O-rings.)
- Install the new O-ring(s) from the oil filter housing O-ring set.
- Lightly coat the new O-ring(s) with fresh oil (pour a little from the new bottle and spread with a gloved finger).
- Install the new engine oil filter element (cartridge style) into the housing.
- Thread the housing cap in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the housing cap using the oil filter housing cap wrench 64mm 14-flute (specialty) and a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Reinstall skid plate access
- Reposition the skid plate.
- Use the 12mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to reinstall the bolts snugly.
Step 6: Refill with fresh oil
- Lower the Land Cruiser from the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap.
- Place a funnel in the fill opening and add engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic).
- Add 7.5–8 quarts first, then you’ll fine-tune the level using the dipstick.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 7: Start, check leaks, and set the final oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back into the pan.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter housing (use safety glasses).
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop rags, reinsert fully, then recheck.
- Add oil in small amounts until the level is at the full mark.
- Small pours prevent overfilling.
✅ After Repair
- Recheck the dipstick level after a short 5–10 minute drive.
- Reset the maintenance reminder (instrument cluster method):
- With the vehicle on, use the steering wheel controls to display ODO (not Trip A/Trip B).
- Turn the vehicle OFF.
- Press and hold the ODO/TRIP button.
- While holding it, turn ignition ON (press Start twice without pressing the brake).
- Keep holding until the reset completes (dashes/zeros finish).
