🔧 C-HR - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the cartridge-style oil filter element, then refill with the correct oil. This keeps your engine lubricated and helps prevent premature wear.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support your C-HR with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Hot oil can burn you—let the engine cool 20–30 minutes if it’s fully warmed up.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off the serpentine belt and exhaust parts to avoid smoke/odors.
  • ⚠️ If you raise the front, chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Oil drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • 14mm socket
  • Torque wrench (3/8")
  • Oil filter housing wrench 64mm 14-flute (specialty)
  • 3/8" drive extension (3"-6")
  • Oil filter drain tool kit (specialty)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Oil filter element (cartridge-style) - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter housing O-ring set - Qty: 1
  • Engine oil drain plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Gather a drain pan and rags—oil will drip from the filter housing.
  • Know your fill amount: refill is about 4.4 quarts (4.2 L) with filter change, then verify on the dipstick.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front of your C-HR

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front, then place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under the proper support points.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle push to confirm it’s stable before you go underneath.

Step 2: Open the under cover access panel

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet (3/8") to remove the bolts for the engine under cover access door.
  • If your cover uses clips, remove them with a trim clip removal tool.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Position the oil drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 14mm socket with a ratchet (3/8") to loosen and remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
  • Remove the old drain plug gasket and install a new engine oil drain plug gasket (crush washer). (A “crush washer” is a soft metal washer that seals when tightened.)

Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Wipe the drain area with shop rags.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten with a torque wrench (3/8") and 14mm socket.
  • Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Drain and remove the oil filter housing

  • Move the oil drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil filter housing area.
  • Use the oil filter drain tool kit (specialty) to drain the filter housing before removal. (This tool helps reduce the oil spill from the housing.)
  • Use the oil filter housing wrench 64mm 14-flute (specialty) with a ratchet (3/8") and 3/8" drive extension (3"-6") to loosen and remove the housing cap.
  • Pull out the old oil filter element (cartridge-style).

Step 6: Replace the housing O-ring(s) and install the new filter

  • Remove the old O-ring(s) from the housing cap and install the new oil filter housing O-ring set.
  • Dip a finger in new oil and lightly coat the new O-ring(s). Dry O-rings can pinch and leak.
  • Install the new oil filter element (cartridge-style) into the housing.

Step 7: Reinstall and torque the oil filter housing

  • Thread the housing cap in by hand until it seats.
  • Tighten using the oil filter housing wrench 64mm 14-flute (specialty) and a torque wrench (3/8").
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe any oil residue with shop rags.

Step 8: Reinstall the under cover access panel

  • Reposition the access door and start bolts by hand.
  • Tighten using a 10mm socket with a ratchet (3/8").

Step 9: Refill with oil and check the level

  • Lower your C-HR off the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine and insert a funnel.
  • Pour in SAE 0W-20 full synthetic, starting with about 4.0 quarts.
  • Wait 1 minute, then check the dipstick. Add oil slowly until it reaches the full mark (typically about 4.4 quarts total with filter change).

Step 10: Start, leak-check, and recheck oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • Shut it off and wait 5 minutes, then recheck the dipstick and top off if needed using the funnel.
  • Look underneath for leaks around the drain plug and filter housing.

Step 11: Reset the maintenance reminder (if it’s on)

  • Turn ignition on without starting: press the Start button twice without pressing the brake.
  • Use the trip button to display ODO (not Trip A/Trip B).
  • Turn ignition off.
  • Press and hold the trip button, then press Start button twice (no brake) while still holding.
  • Keep holding until the reset completes (dashes/zeros disappear).

✅ After Repair

  • Confirm the oil level is at the full mark on the dipstick after a short drive.
  • Make sure there are no fresh drips under the engine after parking for 10 minutes.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly (most parts stores accept waste oil).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
