🔧 MX-5 Miata - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
Changing the oil and filter keeps your engine lubricated and helps prevent wear and sludge buildup. On your MX-5 Miata, this is a straightforward job as long as the car is safely supported and you don’t overtighten the drain plug or filter.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Never work under a car supported only by a jack—use jack stands.
- 🔥 Engine oil and exhaust parts can be hot; let the car cool 10-15 minutes after warming it up.
- 🧯 Keep oil off the tire/brake area; clean spills immediately.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🧭 Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- 🧊 Warm the engine 2-3 minutes, then shut it off and wait 10-15 minutes so oil is warm (drains better) but not dangerously hot.
- 🛠️ A “trim clip remover tool” is a small pry tool that pops plastic fasteners out without breaking them.
- 🧰 Set your oil drain pan and tools within reach before you lift the car.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and support the front of the car
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the car at the approved front jack point.
- Set the car onto jack stands at the front support points and gently lower the floor jack.
- Give the car a shake test.
Step 2: Remove the front under cover (undertray)
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and socket wrench to remove the under cover bolts.
- Use a trim clip remover tool to pop out any plastic clips.
- Lower the under cover and set it aside.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap (this helps oil drain faster).
- Position the oil drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 17mm socket and socket wrench to loosen the drain plug, then finish by hand.
- Let oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new drain plug crush washer.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench with a 17mm socket and Torque to 30-41 Nm (22-30 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the area clean with shop towels.
Step 5: Remove and replace the oil filter
- Move the oil drain pan under the oil filter area (oil will spill when the filter comes off).
- Use an oil filter wrench (adjustable band type) to loosen the old filter, then spin it off by hand.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket didn’t stick to the engine (a stuck gasket can cause a major leak).
- Lightly oil the new filter’s rubber gasket using a dab of new oil.
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
Step 6: Reinstall the under cover
- Lift the under cover back into place.
- Install plastic clips by hand, then press them in using the trim clip remover tool as needed.
- Use a 10mm socket and socket wrench to reinstall the bolts snugly (do not over-tighten into plastic).
Step 7: Refill with oil
- Place a funnel in the oil fill hole.
- Pour in about 4.0 quarts first, then reinstall the oil fill cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle 30-60 seconds, then shut it off.
- Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed (typical fill is about 4.4 quarts (4.2 L) with filter).
- Wipe spills with shop towels.
Step 8: Check for leaks
- With the engine running, look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Shut the engine off and recheck the dipstick level after 5 minutes.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Take a short 5-10 minute drive, then recheck for leaks and confirm the oil level is near the top mark on the dipstick.
- 🖥️ Reset the oil maintenance reminder on Mazda Connect: Applications > Vehicle Status Monitor > Maintenance > Oil Change > Reset
- ♻️ Pour used oil into a sealed container and take it (and the old filter) to an oil recycling drop-off.
