How to Change Engine Oil & Oil Filter on a 2018 Cadillac Escalade 6.2L
Step-by-step DIY oil service with tools, 0W-20 dexos1 capacity, drain plug torque, and oil life reset
🔧 Escalade - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
This job drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills with the correct oil for your Escalade’s 6.2L. Fresh oil protects the engine from wear, helps cooling, and keeps the oil life monitor accurate.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and support the SUV with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Hot oil can burn you; let the engine cool 15–30 minutes if it’s very hot.
- ⚠️ Keep the area ventilated and clean up spills immediately (oil is slippery).
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for an oil change.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1) - Qty: 8 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Gather your oil drain pan, new oil, and new filter so you’re not searching mid-job.
- Warm oil drains faster and more completely.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Warm the engine briefly
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off.
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand (this helps oil drain faster).
Step 2: Safely raise and support the front
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Give the SUV a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before getting underneath.
Step 3: Remove the lower shield (if equipped)
- If your Escalade has a lower splash shield under the engine, remove fasteners using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Use a trim clip tool to pop plastic clips out without breaking them (a trim clip tool is a forked pry tool made for push-pins).
Step 4: Drain the old oil
- Place the oil drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
- Wipe the drain plug area clean using shop towels.
Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug
- Install a new oil drain plug gasket on the drain plug.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
- Tighten using a 3/8" drive torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Remove the oil filter
- Move the oil drain pan under the oil filter area (it will spill when the filter comes off).
- Use an oil filter wrench (strap type) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the old filter (a stuck gasket can cause a serious leak).
Step 7: Install the new oil filter
- Put a light film of new oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
- Hand-tight is correct—don’t over-tighten.
Step 8: Reinstall the lower shield (if removed)
- Reinstall the splash shield and fasteners using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Snug fasteners firmly—do not strip plastic clips.
Step 9: Refill with new oil
- Lower the SUV from the jack stands using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Add Engine oil (SAE 0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1) slowly (start with about 7.5 quarts).
- Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
Step 10: Start, check for leaks, and verify the level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Look under the SUV for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
- Check the dipstick, then add oil as needed to reach the full mark (typically ends up near 8 quarts total with filter).
Step 11: Reset the Oil Life Monitor
- Turn ignition to ON (engine can be off).
- Using the steering wheel controls, navigate the Driver Information Center to the oil life screen.
- Select reset/confirm until oil life shows 100%.
âś… After Repair
- Recheck for drips after your first short drive.
- Confirm the oil level again on level ground after the engine sits 5–10 minutes.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center/parts store—do not pour it out.
