🔧 Q5 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

Changing the oil and oil filter keeps your Q5’s turbo engine properly lubricated and helps prevent sludge and premature wear. You’ll drain the old oil, replace the cartridge-style oil filter, then refill with the correct spec oil and verify the electronic oil level.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and support the Q5 with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Engine oil can be very hot; let it cool 15-30 minutes to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off the serpentine belt and exhaust components.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Torx T25 bit socket
  • Torx T30 bit socket
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10-60 Nm range)
  • 32mm socket (oil filter housing cap)
  • Torx T45 bit socket
  • 19mm socket
  • Oil drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip tool
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, VW 508 00 approved) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter cartridge kit (includes new O-rings) - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer (if equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug (recommended if one-time-use style) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap to help the oil drain.
  • Plan your oil-level check in MMI after filling: CAR > Vehicle > Oil level (wording may vary slightly).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and support the Q5

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front center jacking point.
  • Set the Q5 securely on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the factory support points.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle push to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.

Step 2: Remove the lower engine cover (belly pan)

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a Torx T25 bit socket and ratchet (3/8" drive) to remove the small fasteners.
  • Use a Torx T30 bit socket and ratchet (3/8" drive) for the larger fasteners (if equipped).
  • If any plastic clips are present, remove them with a trim clip tool.
  • Lower the cover and set it aside.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Position the oil drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Clean around the drain plug with shop rags.
  • Remove the drain plug using the tool that fits your plug:
    • Use a Torx T45 bit socket if the plug has a Torx recess.
    • Use a 19mm socket if the plug is a hex-head style.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (typically 10-15 minutes).

Step 4: Replace the oil filter cartridge (top of engine)

  • Move the oil drain pan (at least 10-quart) under the oil filter housing area (some oil will spill).
  • Use a 32mm socket (oil filter housing cap) with a ratchet (3/8" drive) to loosen the oil filter housing cap.
  • Lift the cap and filter out together, then pull the old filter off the cap.
  • Replace the O-ring(s) included with the new filter kit.
    • An O-ring is a rubber sealing ring; it prevents leaks under pressure.
    • Lightly coat the new O-ring with fresh oil using a gloved finger.
  • Install the new filter onto the cap until it clicks/seats.
  • Reinstall the cap by hand first (to avoid cross-threading), then tighten with a torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10-60 Nm range): Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Install the new crush washer (if equipped) onto the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand until seated.
  • Tighten using a torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10-60 Nm range) with the correct bit/socket: Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe any oil residue with shop rags.

Step 6: Reinstall the belly pan

  • Lift the cover into place.
  • Start all fasteners by hand first.
  • Tighten using a Torx T25 bit socket / Torx T30 bit socket with a ratchet (3/8" drive) until snug. Do not overtighten plastic fasteners.

Step 7: Lower the Q5 and refill with oil

  • Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then lower fully.
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, VW 508 00 approved):
    • Add about 5.5 quarts first, then check level electronically and top off as needed.
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap.

Step 8: Start engine, check for leaks, and verify oil level (MMI)

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug area (use safety glasses).
  • Wait 2-3 minutes, then check oil level in the MMI: CAR > Vehicle > Oil level.
  • If low, add oil in small amounts (about 0.2 quart at a time) using the funnel, then recheck.

Step 9: Reset the oil service reminder (MMI)

  • With ignition on, use the MMI to navigate to: CAR > Settings & Service > Service & Checks > Service intervals.
  • Select the oil change reset option and confirm.
  • If the menu wording differs, look for Service, Service intervals, or Reset oil change.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck for leaks after your first short drive (5-10 minutes).
  • Confirm the oil level again in the MMI: CAR > Vehicle > Oil level.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center or parts store that accepts waste oil.
