🔧 Pacifica - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with fresh oil. This keeps the 3.6L engine lubricated and helps prevent wear and sludge buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and support the van with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool 30–60 minutes; hot oil can burn you.
- ⚠️ Keep clear of any orange high-voltage cables; do not unplug HV components.
- ⚠️ Make sure the vehicle is OFF, in PARK, and the key/fob is away from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; oil can irritate skin and eyes.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Oil filter cartridge kit (includes O-rings) - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug sealing washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface, shift to PARK, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap (this helps oil drain faster).
- Tip: Lay cardboard under the engine area.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front
- Use a floor jack to lift the front at the correct jacking point.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands and gently shake the van to confirm it’s stable.
- Keep wheel chocks in place.
Step 2: Remove the lower access cover (if equipped)
- If a splash shield blocks access, remove fasteners using an 8mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Remove plastic push-clips using a trim clip removal tool (a small forked tool that pops clips out without breaking them).
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
- Clean the drain plug threads with shop rags and install a new oil drain plug sealing washer.
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
- Use a torque wrench and 13mm socket: Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Replace the oil filter (cartridge style on the 3.6L)
- Locate the oil filter housing cap on top of the engine.
- Place shop rags around the housing to catch drips.
- Use a 24mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the cap.
- Pull the old cartridge filter off the cap.
- Replace the O-ring(s) included with the filter kit (the O-ring is a rubber sealing ring that prevents leaks).
- Lightly coat the new O-ring(s) with fresh oil (use a finger with a small amount of new oil).
- Install the new cartridge filter onto the cap and reinstall the cap by hand.
- Use a torque wrench and 24mm socket: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Reinstall the lower cover (if removed)
- Reinstall the splash shield using the 8mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and any clips you removed with the trim clip removal tool.
Step 7: Refill with new oil
- Lower the van off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Add 5.5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic to start.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
- Tip: It’s safer to underfill, then top off.
Step 8: Start, check for leaks, then set the level
- Start the engine and let it run for 30–60 seconds.
- Turn the engine OFF and wait 3–5 minutes.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter housing (use safety glasses).
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop rags, reinsert, then recheck.
- Top off in small amounts until the oil level is at the proper mark.
✅ After Repair
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center or parts store that accepts waste oil.
- Reset the oil life monitor:
- Using the steering wheel controls, go to Vehicle Info > Oil Life, then press and hold OK to reset.
- If that menu isn’t available: turn ignition to RUN (engine OFF) and press the accelerator to the floor 3 times within 10 seconds, then turn ignition OFF.
- Recheck the oil level the next day after a short drive and top off if needed.
