🔧 Murano - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills with fresh oil. Doing it on schedule keeps your engine lubricated properly and helps prevent wear and sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the Murano with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Engine oil can be hot—let the engine cool 10-20 minutes to avoid burns.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off the exhaust and belts; wipe spills right away.
  • ⚠️ Never rely on a floor jack alone; always use jack stands.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (8-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)
  • 10mm socket
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Oil filter wrench (65mm 14-flute cap)
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Drive 5-10 minutes to warm the oil slightly, then park on level ground.
  • 🧰 Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🧰 Raise the front with a floor jack and support securely on jack stands at the proper front lift/support points.
  • 🧰 Locate the lower engine under-cover/splash shield (a plastic panel that protects the underside). You’ll remove part of it to access the drain plug and filter.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower under-cover (splash shield)

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the small bolts holding the access panel/under-cover area.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any push-clips without breaking them.
  • Keep bolts and clips in a small tray.

Step 2: Drain the old engine oil

  • Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish removing it by hand.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.

Step 3: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 3/8" torque wrench with a 14mm socket to tighten the drain plug.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)

Step 4: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (65mm 14-flute cap) to loosen the filter. (An oil filter wrench is a tool that grips the filter so you can turn it.)
  • Spin the filter off by hand and keep it upright as you remove it.
  • Use shop rags to wipe the filter mounting surface clean.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Put a small dab of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket (this helps it seal).
  • Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten it an additional 2/3 turn by hand.
  • If using a 3/8" torque wrench with your filter tool: Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Reinstall the under-cover (splash shield)

  • Reposition the panel and reinstall fasteners using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Press any push-clips back in by hand (use the trim clip removal tool to align them if needed).

Step 7: Refill with new engine oil

  • Lower the Murano back to the ground from the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap.
  • Use a funnel and add 0W-20 full synthetic oil.
  • Start by adding about 5 quarts, then check the dipstick and top off to the full mark.
  • Add oil slowly near the “FULL” mark.

Step 8: Run the engine and recheck level

  • Start the engine and let it idle 30-60 seconds.
  • Turn the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back to the pan.
  • Check the dipstick again and top off as needed.
  • Look underneath for leaks around the drain plug and oil filter.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧾 Reset the oil maintenance reminder on the cluster: Settings > Maintenance > Oil and Filter > Reset (wording may show as “Oil” on some displays).
  • 🧾 Recheck for leaks after your first short drive.
  • 🧾 Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts waste oil.
