🔧 Frontier - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
On your Frontier, an oil change replaces the engine oil and the spin-on oil filter so the engine stays lubricated and clean. This is routine maintenance, and doing it on time helps prevent internal wear and sludge buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 45-90 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool 15–30 minutes; oil can burn you.
- ⚠️ Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off the exhaust and skid plates to avoid smoke/odor.
- ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (5W-30 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Oil filter - Qty: 1
- Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Raise the front with a floor jack and set it securely on jack stands.
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand (this helps the crankcase vent while draining).
- If equipped, remove the front skid plate to access the drain plug and filter.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the skid plate (if equipped)
- Position your drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the engine area.
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the skid plate bolts.
- Lower the skid plate and set it aside.
Step 2: Drain the old engine oil
- Slide the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish removing it by hand.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new drain plug crush washer.
Step 3: Reinstall and torque the drain plug
- Wipe the drain hole area with shop rags.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench (10–80 ft-lbs range) with a 14mm socket and Torque to 34 N·m (25 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan (8-quart minimum)
- Use an oil filter wrench (cap or band style) to break the filter loose, then spin it off by hand.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the filter (it can stick to the engine). Double-gasket leaks fast.
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Put a light film of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger (nitrile gloves).
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the base.
- Tighten by hand an additional 2/3 turn (do not use the filter wrench to tighten).
Step 6: Reinstall the skid plate (if removed)
- Position the skid plate back in place.
- Use a 12mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension to install and snug the bolts evenly.
Step 7: Refill with new oil
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole.
- Pour in about 5.0 quarts of 5W-30 full synthetic first.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
Step 8: Start, check for leaks, then set the oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back into the pan.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter; use safety glasses.
- Check the dipstick, then add oil in small amounts until it reaches the full mark (your Frontier typically ends up around ~5.1 quarts with filter). Sneak up on “Full.”
✅ After Repair
- Take a short 5–10 minute drive, then recheck for leaks and recheck the dipstick level.
- Reset the oil maintenance reminder (if it’s on): use the steering-wheel buttons to navigate the cluster display to Settings > Maintenance > Oil and Filter, then select Reset.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly at an oil recycling drop-off.
