šŸ”§ Acadia - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

This job drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills with the correct oil. Fresh oil protects your engine from wear and helps it run cooler and cleaner.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

Assumption: 5W-30 dexos1 oil, ~6.0 qt with filter, spin-on filter.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a level surface; chock the rear wheels before lifting.
  • āš ļø Never rely on a jack alone—support with jack stands.
  • āš ļø Engine oil can be hot; let the engine cool 10-20 minutes.
  • āš ļø Keep oil off belts/exhaust to avoid smoke and odors.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this service.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10-80 Nm range)
  • Oil filter wrench (cap or band style)
  • 10mm socket
  • Trim clip remover

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (5W-30 full synthetic, dexos1) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug gasket or drain plug (if worn/damaged) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Run the engine for 2-3 minutes to warm the oil slightly, then shut it off.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap to help the oil drain faster.
  • If your Acadia has a lower splash shield, plan to remove the access panel first.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and support the front safely

  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front jacking point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Give the SUV a gentle shake test.

Step 2: Remove the splash shield/access panel (if equipped)

  • Position your drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the engine area.
  • Remove shield fasteners using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Pop any plastic retainers using a trim clip remover (this is a small pry tool that lifts plastic clips without breaking them).

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Slide the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Loosen the drain plug using a 15mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Finish removing the plug by hand (wear nitrile gloves) and let the oil drain fully (5-10 minutes).
  • Inspect the drain plug gasket/sealing surface; replace the gasket/plug if damaged.

Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Wipe the drain hole area with shop towels.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (to avoid cross-threading).
  • Tighten with a torque wrench (10-80 Nm range).
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil filter area.
  • Loosen the filter using an oil filter wrench (cap or band style) (this grips the filter when it’s too tight by hand).
  • Spin the filter off by hand and let it drain into the pan.
  • Use shop towels to wipe the sealing surface on the engine.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter.

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Put a thin film of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger (nitrile gloves).
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches.
  • Tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn.
  • Hand-tight is correct—don’t use a wrench.

Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield/access panel (if removed)

  • Reposition the panel and install fasteners using a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Reinstall any retainers with the trim clip remover as needed.

Step 8: Refill with the correct oil

  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole.
  • Add Engine oil (5W-30 full synthetic, dexos1), starting with about 5.5 quarts.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.

Step 9: Start, check for leaks, and set the final oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Look underneath for leaks around the drain plug and oil filter.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Check the dipstick, wipe it with shop towels, reinsert, then re-check.
  • Add oil through the funnel as needed to reach the full mark (don’t overfill).

āœ… After Repair

  • Reset the oil life monitor on the cluster: Menu button > Vehicle Information > Oil Life, then press and hold SET/CLR to reset to 100%.
  • Recheck for leaks after your first short drive.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly at a local recycling/parts shop.
