🔧 CX-9 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct oil. This keeps your turbo engine lubricated, reduces wear, and helps prevent sludge and timing/VVT issues.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Let the engine cool 20–30 minutes; oil can burn you.
  • 🛑 Support your CX-9 with jack stands—never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • 🛑 Keep oil off the turbo/downpipe area; wipe spills immediately.
  • 🛑 Wear gloves and safety glasses; used oil is a skin irritant.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Metric socket set (8mm, 10mm, 17mm)
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench (10–80 Nm range)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Oil filter wrench (cup-style or band-style)
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (SAE 5W-30 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer (gasket) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • 🔥 Warm oil drains faster: idle 2–3 minutes, then shut off. Don’t work under a fully hot engine.
  • 🧰 If you’re new to this: a trim clip tool is a small pry tool that pops plastic fasteners out without breaking them.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front of your CX-9

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper front jack point.
  • Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and gently shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (under cover)

  • Place your drain pan (at least 8-quart) nearby.
  • Use an 8mm socket and 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to remove the small bolts/screws.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic push-clips. Pry the center pin first.
  • Set all hardware aside so nothing gets lost.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Slide the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 17mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the drain plug (counterclockwise).
  • Finish removing the plug by hand and let the oil drain fully (usually 5–10 minutes).
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.

Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 3/8" torque wrench (10–80 Nm range) with a 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean with shop towels.

Step 5: Remove and replace the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan
  • Use an oil filter wrench (cup-style or band-style) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket isn’t stuck to the engine (double-gasket can cause a leak).
  • Put a light film of new oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket (use a gloved finger).
  • Install the new filter by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand. Don’t use the wrench to tighten.

Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield (under cover)

  • Reposition the cover and start all fasteners by hand.
  • Use an 8mm socket and 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to snug the bolts/screws.
  • Press the clips back in using the trim clip removal tool as needed.

Step 7: Refill with oil and verify the level

  • Lower the vehicle safely from the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Open the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
  • Use a funnel and add 5.1 quarts (4.8 L) of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic.
  • Wait 2 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed to reach the full mark (don’t overfill).

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Start the engine and let it idle 30–60 seconds; confirm the oil pressure light turns off normally.
  • 🔎 Look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • 📏 Shut off, wait 2–3 minutes, then re-check the dipstick and adjust level if needed.
  • 🧾 Reset the oil maintenance reminder (Mazda Connect paths can vary):
Home > Applications > Vehicle Status Monitor > Maintenance > Oil Change > Reset
    or
    Home > Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance > Oil Change > Reset
  • ♻️ Take used oil and the old filter to an oil-recycling drop-off (most parts stores accept it).
