🔧 Suburban - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills with the correct oil. Fresh oil protects your engine from wear and keeps oil pressure and lubrication where it should be.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

Assumption: your Suburban uses 0W-20 dexos1 and ~8 quarts with filter.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • ⚠️ Let the exhaust and oil pan cool slightly; hot oil can burn.
  • ⚠️ Support the truck with jack stands before going underneath (never rely on a jack).
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses; oil can splash when the drain plug comes out.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts and the front axle/CV boots; wipe spills immediately.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 Nm range)
  • Oil drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1 approved) - Qty: 8 quarts
  • Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a flat surface, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand (this helps it drain smoothly).
  • If you need more room, raise the front with a floor jack and support with jack stands at the frame.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Set up under the engine

  • Slide the oil drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

Step 2: Drain the engine oil

  • Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
  • Finish removing the plug by hand and pull it away quickly so oil drops into the pan.
  • Let the oil drain until it becomes a slow drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
  • Wipe the drain plug and sealing surface with shop rags.

Step 3: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Install a new drain plug gasket if equipped/required.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (this prevents cross-threading).
  • Use a 3/8" drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • A torque wrench ensures correct tightness.

Step 4: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the oil drain pan under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
  • Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter (a stuck gasket will cause a leak).
  • Oil filter wrench = tool that grips the filter.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Use a clean finger to wipe a thin film of new oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the engine, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
  • If you’re using a torque method, tighten to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs) with an appropriate oil filter wrench and torque wrench (only if your filter wrench setup allows it).

Step 6: Refill with new oil

  • Place a funnel in the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
  • Pour in 7.5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1 first.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.

Step 7: Start, check for leaks, then top off

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 3-5 minutes for oil to settle.
  • Check underneath with safety glasses for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop rags, reinsert, then read the level.
  • Add oil in small amounts using the funnel until the level is at the full mark (total is typically about 8 quarts with filter).

Step 8: Reset the oil life monitor

  • Turn the key to ON (engine off).
  • On the Driver Information Center (DIC) (the info screen in your gauge cluster), use the steering wheel buttons to find Oil Life.
  • Path A: Use the MENU button to reach Vehicle Info, scroll to Oil Life, then press and hold SET/CLR until it resets to 100%.
  • Path B: Scroll to Oil Life, then press and hold the or SEL button (label varies) until it resets to 100%.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck the dipstick one more time after a short drive and top off if needed.
  • Look for fresh drips under the filter and drain plug area.
  • Pour used oil into sealed containers and recycle it (most parts stores accept used oil and filters).
  • Write down the mileage/date for your next oil change.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$180 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $45-$80 (parts only)
