🔧 Suburban - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
On your Suburban, changing the engine oil and oil filter removes contaminated oil and helps protect the 5.3L V8 from wear. You’ll drain the old oil, replace the filter, then refill with the correct dexos-approved oil and reset the oil life monitor.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and chock the wheels before lifting.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be very hot—let it cool if needed.
- ⚠️ Always support with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts and exhaust parts to avoid smoke/odor.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for an oil change.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1-approved) - Qty: 8 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Suburban on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap to help the crankcase vent while draining.
- If you need more room underneath, lift the front and support it securely on jack stands.
- If there’s a plastic underbody shield blocking access, remove it (the fasteners are commonly 7mm/10mm screws and/or clips).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front (if needed)
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front jacking point, then set the frame on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
Step 2: Remove the underbody shield (if equipped)
- If a plastic panel blocks the oil pan/filter, remove the screws using a 7mm socket or 10mm socket (use the size that fits your fasteners).
- Remove any push-clips using a flat trim clip tool (this is a small pry tool that pops plastic clips out without breaking them).
- Set the panel and hardware aside in order.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Position a drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 15mm socket with a ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug
- Wipe the drain plug and the oil pan sealing surface using shop towels.
- Install a new drain plug gasket if your gasket is flattened/cracked.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench (ft-lb range).
- Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs)
Step 5: Remove the old oil filter
- Move the drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil filter area (the filter will spill oil as it comes off).
- Use an oil filter wrench (adjustable band type) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter (a stuck gasket can cause a major leak).
Step 6: Install the new oil filter
- Lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket with fresh oil (dab oil on your glove/finger).
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn. Do not use the wrench to tighten.
Step 7: Refill with fresh oil
- Place a funnel in the oil fill opening on the engine.
- Pour in 7.5 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1-approved.
- Reinstall the oil filler cap, then start the engine for 30–60 seconds and check underneath for leaks.
- Shut the engine off, wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed to reach the full mark (typically ends up near 8 quarts total with filter).
Step 8: Reinstall the underbody shield (if removed)
- Reposition the panel and start all screws by hand.
- Tighten using a 7mm socket or 10mm socket (match your fasteners).
Step 9: Reset the oil life monitor
- Method A (Driver Information Center): Turn ignition ON (engine off). Use steering wheel buttons to find the Oil Life screen, then press and hold the select button to reset to 100%.
- Method B (pedal method): Turn ignition ON (engine off). Fully press and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds. The oil life should reset.
✅ After Repair
- Verify the oil level is at the dipstick full mark after a 5-minute wait.
- Check for leaks at the drain plug and around the oil filter after a short test drive.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly (most parts stores/service shops accept used oil).
