🔧 Corolla - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter element (inside the filter housing), then refill with the correct oil and verify the level. This keeps your engine lubricated and helps prevent premature wear and sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool-to-warm engine, not fully hot (burn risk).
  • ⚠️ Support your Corolla with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts, exhaust, and tires; clean spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; used oil is a skin irritant.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 6-quart capacity)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • 14mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension (3"-6")
  • Torque wrench (10-80 Nm range)
  • 64mm 14-flute oil filter cap wrench (specialty)
  • Trim clip removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Oil filter element - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter housing O-ring set - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Warm the engine 2–3 minutes, then shut it off (warm oil drains faster).
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap (helps it drain smoothly).
  • Plan a proper used-oil drop-off (auto parts store or recycling center).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front of your Corolla

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper front jacking point.
  • Set the car onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) and gently shake the car to confirm it’s stable.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.

Step 2: Remove the lower access cover (undertray service door)

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the small bolts holding the oil service access panel.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool for any plastic clips.
  • Tip: Keep bolts/clips in a cup.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Position a drain pan (at least 6-quart capacity) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
  • Remove the old drain plug gasket and install the new oil drain plug gasket (crush washer).
  • Reinstall the drain plug by hand first (prevents cross-threading), then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 40 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the oil filter housing cap and replace the filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter housing (it will spill some oil).
  • Use a 64mm 14-flute oil filter cap wrench (specialty) with a 3/8" drive ratchet and 3/8" drive extension (3"-6") to loosen the filter housing cap.
  • Remove the cap and pull out the old oil filter element.
  • Remove and replace the housing O-ring(s) using the new oil filter housing O-ring set.
  • Lightly coat the new O-ring(s) with fresh oil (this helps seal and prevents tearing).
  • Install the new filter element into the housing/cap assembly (same orientation as removed).
  • Thread the housing cap back on by hand first, then tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Tip: Hand-thread first to avoid damage.

Step 5: Reinstall the undertray access cover

  • Reposition the access panel.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to reinstall bolts, and the trim clip removal tool to reinstall clips.

Step 6: Refill with fresh oil and verify level

  • Lower the car safely off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole and add about 4.0 quarts of engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic).
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.
  • Start the engine and let it idle 30–60 seconds, then shut it off.
  • Wait 3–5 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed (typical total is about 4.4 quarts with filter).
  • Wipe any oil residue using shop rags.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for leaks around the drain plug and filter housing with the engine running, then again after a short drive.
  • Recheck the dipstick level after your first 10–15 minute drive and top off if needed.
  • Reset the maintenance reminder:
    • Turn ignition ON (engine off).
    • Use the trip button to display ODO (not Trip A/B).
    • Turn ignition OFF.
    • Press and hold the trip reset button, then turn ignition ON.
    • Keep holding until the display shows zeros/complete.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter properly (recycling center/parts store).
