🔧 Sierra 1500 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct oil for your Sierra 1500. Doing this on time protects the 5.3L’s bearings and lifters and helps prevent sludge and wear.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool 15–30 minutes to avoid burns from hot oil and exhaust.
- ⚠️ If you lift the truck, support it with jack stands on the frame—never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts and exhaust parts to reduce smoke/odor after startup.
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Wheel chocks
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- 15mm socket
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- Torque wrench (10–50 ft-lbs range)
- Oil drain pan (10-quart minimum)
- Oil filter wrench
- Funnel
- Shop rags
- 10mm socket
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1-approved) - Qty: 8 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Sierra 1500 on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Warm the engine for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- If equipped with an underbody panel/air deflector that blocks access, plan to remove it with a 10mm socket.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and secure the front (if needed)
- If you have enough room to reach the drain plug and filter safely, you can skip lifting.
- If you need clearance, use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at a safe jacking point, then support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Keep wheel chocks in place.
Step 2: Remove any splash shield/air deflector (if equipped)
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the bolts holding the panel.
- Set the bolts aside so they don’t get lost.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Place the oil drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip.
- Wipe the drain plug and sealing area with shop rags.
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug
- Replace the oil drain plug gasket if your Sierra 1500 uses a separate seal.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first (to avoid cross-threading).
- Use a torque wrench (10–50 ft-lbs range) and 15mm socket to tighten: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Remove the oil filter
- Move the oil drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
- Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter, then spin it off by hand.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the filter (it can stick to the engine). Double-gasket causes major leaks.
Step 6: Install the new oil filter
- Put a light film of new oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
- Spin the filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
- If you must use the oil filter wrench to snug it, use only gentle pressure—don’t crush the filter.
Step 7: Refill with new engine oil
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap.
- Insert a funnel and add Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1-approved)—start with about 7.5 quarts.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and set the oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle 30–60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and inspect the drain plug and oil filter area with safety glasses on for leaks.
- Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick, wipe with shop rags, reinsert, and re-check.
- Add oil as needed to reach the proper level (usually close to the full 8 quarts total with filter).
Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield (if removed) and lower the truck
- Reinstall the panel using the 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
- Remove jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and lower with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
Step 10: Reset the Oil Life monitor
- Turn the key to ON (engine off) or put the truck in accessory mode.
- Use the steering wheel buttons to open the Driver Information Center oil screen, then reset.
- Menu path (common): Oil Life > Press and hold SET/CLR to reset
✅ After Repair
- Recheck for leaks after your first short drive and again the next morning.
- Verify the dipstick level is still correct on level ground.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center or parts store—don’t dump it.
