🔧 MDX - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

Changing the oil and oil filter keeps your engine lubricated and removes contaminants that cause wear. On your MDX, you’ll drain the old oil, replace the crush washer and filter, then refill with the correct oil and reset the Maintenance Minder.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on a level surface and support the MDX with jack stands (never rely on a jack alone).
  • 🛑 Hot oil can burn—let the engine cool 15-30 minutes if it’s fully hot.
  • 🛑 Wear gloves and safety glasses; oil will drip when the filter comes off.
  • 🛑 Keep oil off the drive belt and exhaust areas; wipe spills immediately.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 Nm range)
  • Oil drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Oil filter wrench (adjustable band type)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • Funnel
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Warm the engine 2-3 minutes, then shut it off (warm oil drains faster).
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap to help the oil drain quicker.
  • If you raise the front, lift at the front center jack point and set the MDX onto jack stands at the proper support points.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Position the oil drain pan under the engine area.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove any 10mm bolts holding the shield.
  • Tip: Keep clips/bolts in a small cup.

Step 2: Drain the engine oil

  • Locate the oil drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan.
  • Use a 17mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
  • Finish removing it by hand and let the oil drain into the oil drain pan.
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new one.

Step 3: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 3/8" drive torque wrench with 17mm socket to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean with shop rags.

Step 4: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the oil drain pan under the oil filter (it will spill when loosened).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (adjustable band type) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket isn’t stuck to the engine (double-gasket can cause a leak).
  • Oil filter gasket = the rubber sealing ring.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Dip a gloved finger in new oil and lightly oil the new filter’s rubber gasket.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the engine surface.
  • Tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn (do not use the wrench to tighten unless you can’t get it snug).
  • Wipe the filter area clean with shop rags.

Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield

  • Reposition the shield.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to reinstall bolts.
  • Reinstall the clips using the trim clip removal tool to align them, then press them in.

Step 7: Refill with new engine oil

  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in 0W-20 full synthetic (start with about 4.5 quarts).
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.

Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and verify the oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 2-3 minutes for oil to settle.
  • Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • Check the dipstick level, then top off as needed (add small amounts using the funnel).

Step 9: Reset the Maintenance Minder (oil life)

  • Turn ignition ON (engine off).
  • Using the steering wheel controls, go to: Settings > Vehicle Settings > Maintenance Info.
  • Select the oil life item and choose: Reset.
  • If you don’t see that menu path, scroll to the Oil Life screen and press/hold the select/enter button to reset.

âś… After Repair

  • Recheck the dipstick the next morning on level ground; top off if needed.
  • Look under the MDX after your first short drive to confirm no seepage at the filter or drain plug.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center/auto parts store (don’t dump it).
