šŸ”§ Sierra 1500 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

On your Sierra 1500, an oil change means draining the old engine oil, replacing the oil filter, and refilling with the correct dexos-approved oil. This keeps the 5.3L properly lubricated and helps prevent sludge, wear, and low-oil-pressure issues.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Hot oil can burn—let the engine cool 15-30 minutes.
  • āš ļø Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack.
  • āš ļø Keep the oil off belts and exhaust parts to avoid smoke/odor.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this service.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 15mm socket
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive)
  • Oil filter cap wrench 24mm 14-flute (specialty)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic, dexos1 approved) - Qty: 8 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug gasket - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off and let it cool 15-30 minutes.
  • Lift the front with a floor jack and support with jack stands under the frame.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the oil fill cap and prep your drain pan

  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand.
  • Slide the drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug area.
  • Removing the cap helps oil drain faster.

Step 2: Drain the old engine oil

  • Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
  • Finish removing the plug by hand and let the oil drain completely into the drain pan (10-quart minimum).
  • Clean the drain plug and inspect the sealing surface; replace the drain plug gasket if it’s flattened, cracked, or missing.

Step 3: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) with a 15mm socket and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe the area clean with shop rags.

Step 4: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil filter area.
  • Use an oil filter cap wrench 24mm 14-flute (specialty) to loosen the oil filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the filter (a ā€œdouble gasketā€ can cause a bad leak).

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Wipe the filter mounting surface using shop rags.
  • Put a light film of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket (use a small amount of your new oil).
  • Install the new filter by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.

Step 6: Refill with new oil

  • Place a funnel in the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in 7.5 quarts first, then reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds, then shut it off.
  • Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed to reach the full mark (typically ends up near 8 quarts total with a filter change).
  • Don’t overfill—add oil in small amounts.

Step 7: Check for leaks

  • With the engine off, look underneath around the drain plug and filter.
  • Wipe any drips with shop rags, then re-check after a short drive.

Step 8: Reset the Oil Life Monitor

  • Driver Information Center method: Turn ignition to ON (engine off). Use the steering wheel controls to find Oil Life, then press and hold OK/āœ“ to reset.
  • Pedal method (if equipped): Turn ignition to ON (engine off). Fully press and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds.

āœ… After Repair

  • Verify the dipstick level is at the full mark and the oil fill cap is installed.
  • Confirm the Oil Life Monitor reset took (should show 100%).
  • Take used oil and the old filter to an oil recycling center/parts store for proper disposal.
