šŸ”§ Veloster - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

Changing the engine oil and oil filter keeps your Veloster’s turbo engine lubricated and helps prevent wear. You’ll drain the old oil, replace the filter, then refill with the correct amount and re-check the level.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

Assumption: Stock oil pan and factory-style spin-on oil filter.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a level surface and support the Veloster with jack stands before going underneath.
  • āš ļø Engine oil can be hot—let it cool 10-20 minutes to avoid burns.
  • āš ļø Keep oil off the exhaust and turbo area to prevent smoke/odor.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this service.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (10-100 Nm range)
  • Oil filter wrench (cap or band style)
  • Drain pan (7-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Trim clip tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Shop rags

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (full synthetic 5W-30) - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, put the transmission in 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off and let it sit 10-20 minutes.
  • Gather a drain pan, rags, and your new filter/washer before lifting the car.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the front of the Veloster

  • Use a floor jack at the front center jack point, then set the car onto jack stands.
  • Give the car a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before you crawl underneath.

Step 2: Remove the lower under-cover (if equipped)

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver and trim clip tool to remove the screws/clips holding the splash shield.
  • Set the clips/screws aside so they don’t get lost.

Step 3: Drain the old engine oil

  • Position the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 17mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then remove it by hand.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new one.

Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (10-100 Nm range) with a 17mm socket and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • Tip: Hand-thread first, always.

Step 5: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan
  • Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket isn’t stuck to the engine (a ā€œdouble gasketā€ can cause a leak).

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Wipe the engine’s filter sealing surface with shop rags.
  • Put a thin film of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket (this helps it seal).
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
  • Tip: ā€œHand tightā€ is tight enough.

Step 7: Reinstall the under-cover

  • Reinstall the splash shield using the Phillips screwdriver and trim clip tool.
  • Make sure no clips are missing and the cover isn’t rubbing anything.

Step 8: Refill with new oil

  • Lower the Veloster back to the ground using the floor jack.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap.
  • Use a funnel and add about 4.5 quarts of 5W-30 full synthetic first.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.

Step 9: Start, check for leaks, then set the final oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop rags, reinsert fully, then re-check.
  • Add oil in small amounts (a little at a time) until the level is near the top mark (do not overfill).

āœ… After Repair

  • Re-check the dipstick level again after a short 5-10 minute drive.
  • Look under the car again for any seepage around the drain plug and filter.
  • If your cluster has a service reminder, reset it through User Settings > Service Interval (menu wording can vary by cluster).
  • Pour the used oil into the empty oil bottles and take it (and the old filter) to an oil recycling drop-off.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
