🔧 Forester - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct oil. This keeps your engine lubricated and helps prevent wear and sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the vehicle with jack stands, not just a jack.
  • ⚠️ Engine oil can be very hot; let the engine cool 15-30 minutes if needed.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off belts, exhaust, and tires; clean spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; used oil is a skin irritant.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (8-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • Oil filter wrench (65mm, 14-flute) (specialty)
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • 12mm socket

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap (this helps oil drain smoothly).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and support the front of your Forester

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front at the approved front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the front pinch welds or front support points and lower onto them.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.

Step 2: Remove the lower engine cover (if equipped)

  • Use a 12mm socket to remove any bolts holding the plastic splash shield.
  • Use a flat trim clip tool to pop out plastic clips (a trim clip tool is a flat prying tool that removes push-clips without breaking them).
  • Set the cover and hardware aside in the order removed.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Position your drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 14mm socket with a ratchet (3/8" drive) to loosen the drain plug.
  • Finish removing the plug by hand and let the oil drain completely (usually 5-10 minutes).
  • Remove the old drain plug crush washer from the drain plug.

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug with a new crush washer

  • Install the new drain plug crush washer on the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive, 10-80 ft-lbs range) with a 14mm socket and Torque to 43 Nm (31 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the oil filter area (the filter will spill some oil).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (65mm, 14-flute) (specialty) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the filter (don’t leave it stuck to the engine).

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Wipe the filter mounting surface clean using shop rags.
  • Lightly oil the new filter’s rubber gasket with a dab of fresh oil (use a gloved finger).
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten by hand an additional 2/3 turn.
  • If you must use the oil filter wrench (65mm, 14-flute) (specialty), use it only gently. Overtight filters can leak later.

Step 7: Reinstall the lower engine cover (if removed)

  • Reposition the cover and install clips by hand.
  • Use the flat trim clip tool as needed to seat clips straight.
  • Use a 12mm socket to reinstall bolts snugly (do not overtighten plastic).

Step 8: Refill with new engine oil

  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Add engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic), starting with about 5.0 quarts.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.

Step 9: Start, check for leaks, and set the oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to settle.
  • Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter using safety glasses.
  • Check the dipstick and top off as needed to reach the full mark (total is typically about 5.1 quarts with filter).

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck the dipstick the next day (cold engine, level ground) and top off if needed.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at an oil recycling center or auto parts store.
  • If your Forester has a maintenance reminder, update it in the display settings after the service.
