🔧 Grand Caravan - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change

This service drains the old engine oil and replaces the oil filter so your engine stays lubricated and clean. Fresh oil helps reduce wear, keeps oil pressure stable, and can prevent sludge buildup.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours

Assumption: your 3.6L uses a spin-on oil filter accessed from underneath.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the van with jack stands before going underneath.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool 15-30 minutes; hot oil can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Keep oil off the exhaust and belts; wipe spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Never rely on a floor jack alone; always use jack stands.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for an oil change.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Funnel
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench (cap or band style)
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • 10mm socket
  • Shop rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (5W-20, meets Chrysler MS-6395) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Engine oil filter (3.6L) - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug gasket/seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Warm the engine 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap (this helps oil drain smoother).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front of the van

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper jacking point.
  • Set the van onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and give it a small shake to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • If there’s a plastic under-cover blocking access, remove fasteners using a 10mm socket and a flat trim clip tool.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

Step 3: Drain the old engine oil

  • Place the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish removing it by hand.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
  • Tip: push the drain pan slightly forward at first.

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Wipe the drain plug area clean with shop rags.
  • Install a new oil drain plug gasket/seal if your plug uses one.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (this helps prevent cross-threading).
  • Use a 3/8" drive torque wrench with a 13mm socket: Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (cap or band style) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with the old filter (it can stick to the engine).

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Wipe the sealing surface clean with shop rags.
  • Put a light film of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket (helps it seal and come off later).
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn.
  • If using a torque method, use a 3/8" drive torque wrench with the proper oil filter wrench (cap or band style): Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Refill with new engine oil

  • Lower the van off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
  • Pour in 5.5 quarts of 5W-20 (meets Chrysler MS-6395) first.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap.

Step 8: Start, check for leaks, then set the final oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-45 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and inspect underneath for leaks around the drain plug and filter.
  • Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and add oil as needed to reach the safe/full range (typically ends up around 5.9 quarts (5.6L) total with filter).
  • Tip: add oil in 0.25-quart steps.

✅ After Repair

  • Reinstall the splash shield (if removed) using a 10mm socket and flat trim clip tool.
  • Reset the oil change indicator:
    • Turn ignition to ON (do not start).
    • Within 10 seconds, press the accelerator pedal to the floor 3 times.
    • Turn ignition OFF.
    • Start the engine and confirm the “change oil” message is cleared.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts waste oil.
