🔧 Tucson - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

On your Tucson, an oil change replaces old engine oil and the oil filter so the engine stays lubricated and clean. Fresh oil helps prevent wear, keeps temperatures down, and can reduce engine noise.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on level ground and support the SUV with jack stands, not the jack alone.
  • 🔥 Engine oil can be hot; let the engine cool 15-30 minutes before draining.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses; oil can irritate skin and splash.
  • 🚫 Keep oil off the drive belt and exhaust components.
  • 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 8-quart)
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • Metric socket set
  • 17mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive)
  • Oil filter wrench (cap or strap type)
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • 10mm socket

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (5W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
  • Open the hood and loosen the oil fill cap by hand (this helps it drain).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Safely raise and support the front

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the correct front jacking point.
  • Set the SUV down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) and gently shake the vehicle to confirm it’s stable.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the bolts holding the lower engine cover.
  • Use a flat trim clip tool to pop out any plastic clips without breaking them.
  • Set the cover and hardware aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

Step 3: Drain the old engine oil

  • Place your drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 17mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish removing it by hand.
  • Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
  • Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.

Step 4: Reinstall and torque the drain plug

  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) with a 17mm socket to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten; the oil pan threads can strip.

Step 5: Remove the old oil filter

  • Move the drain pan (at least 8-quart) under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
  • Use an oil filter wrench (cap or strap type) to loosen the filter, then spin it off by hand.
  • Wipe the sealing surface with shop rags.
  • Check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter (not stuck to the engine).

Step 6: Install the new oil filter

  • Put a light film of new oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the base, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
  • If you use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) and your filter setup allows it: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-tight is usually correct for spin-on filters.

Step 7: Add new engine oil

  • Lower the SUV back to the ground using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening on top of the engine.
  • Pour in 5.0 quarts of engine oil (5W-20 full synthetic) to start.
  • Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.

Step 8: Start, inspect, and set the final oil level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to drain back to the pan.
  • Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter using safety glasses.
  • Check the dipstick level, then add oil in small amounts using the funnel until it reaches the full mark.
  • Total fill is typically about 5.1 quarts (4.8 L) with a filter change, but always confirm by dipstick.

Step 9: Reinstall the lower splash shield (if removed)

  • Reposition the cover and start the bolts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to snug the bolts.
  • Reinstall clips using the flat trim clip tool.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck the dipstick level the next morning (cold engine) and top off if needed.
  • Dispose of used oil and the filter at a recycling center or parts store that accepts waste oil.
  • If your Tucson has a service reminder in the cluster, reset it using the steering wheel buttons: User Settings > Service Interval > Reset (wording can vary by cluster).
