Step-by-step DIY oil service with required tools, oil capacity, drain plug torque specs, and reset instructions for 2009, 2010
🔧 Corolla - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
Changing the oil and oil filter removes dirty oil and protects your engine from wear. On your Corolla, you’ll drain the old oil from the oil pan, replace the spin-on oil filter, then refill with the correct amount and viscosity.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.75-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the car with jack stands before going underneath.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be very hot; let the engine cool 15-30 minutes if it was just driven.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; oil can irritate skin and splash unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Keep the car in 1st gear and set the parking brake; chock the rear wheels.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (SAE 5W-30) - Qty: 5 quarts
- Oil filter (spin-on type for Corolla 1.8L) - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1
- Brake cleaner spray - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, place the shifter in 1st gear, and turn the engine off.
- Chock both rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Gather oil capacity info: with filter change, your Corolla takes about 4.4 qt (4.2 L); start slightly low and top off to the dipstick.
- If equipped with a lower splash shield, you may need to remove an access panel using a 10mm socket and flat trim clip tool (specialty).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Warm the oil slightly
- Start the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off.
- Warm oil drains faster, but avoid hot burns.
Step 2: Raise and support the front of the car
- Lift the front using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) at the front center jacking point.
- Set the car down onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) at the front side support points.
- Give the car a firm shake to confirm it’s stable before going underneath.
Step 3: Remove the splash shield access (if equipped)
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the small access panel fasteners.
- Use a flat trim clip tool (specialty) to pop any plastic clips without breaking them.
Step 4: Drain the engine oil
- Place the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new oil drain plug gasket (crush washer).
Step 5: Reinstall and torque the drain plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive torque wrench to tighten: Torque to 37 N·m (27 ft-lbs).
- Spray and wipe the area with brake cleaner spray and shop rags so you can spot leaks later.
Step 6: Remove the oil filter
- Move the drain pan (8-quart minimum) under the oil filter area (more oil will come out).
- Use an oil filter wrench (cup-style 64-65mm, 14-flute) (specialty) with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the filter.
- Spin the filter off by hand and keep it upright to reduce spills.
- Confirm the old rubber gasket came off with the filter (a stuck gasket can cause a big leak).
Step 7: Install the new oil filter
- Wipe the filter mounting surface with shop rags.
- Put a light film of fresh oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket using a gloved finger.
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand.
- If you must use the wrench to snug it, do not over-tighten.
Step 8: Reinstall the splash shield access (if removed)
- Use the 10mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to reinstall bolts.
- Press clips back in using the flat trim clip tool (specialty).
Step 9: Refill with new oil
- Lower the car off the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap.
- Place a funnel in the filler opening and add 4.0 qt of SAE 5W-30 first.
- Wait 1 minute, then check the dipstick and top off until it reaches the full mark (total is typically about 4.4 qt (4.2 L) with filter).
Step 10: Start, check for leaks, and recheck the level
- Start the engine and let it idle 30-60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick again and adjust as needed.
Step 11: Reset the maintenance required light
- Turn the key to ON (do not start).
- Use the trip button to display Trip A.
- Turn the key OFF.
- Press and hold the trip reset button, then turn the key to ON while still holding it.
- Keep holding until the indicator resets (display counts down/zeros), then release.
✅ After Repair
- Recheck for leaks after your first short drive (5-10 minutes).
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center/auto parts store that accepts waste oil.
- Keep a note of mileage/date so you know when the next oil change is due.
