🔧 X3 - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
On your X3, the oil lubricates and cools the turbocharged engine, and the filter traps dirt/metal particles. Changing both on schedule helps prevent timing-chain wear, turbo issues, and sludge.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-1.5 hours
Assumption: your X3 has the 2.0L N20 with a top-mounted cartridge oil filter.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and use jack stands (never rely on a jack alone).
- ⚠️ Let the exhaust and oil pan cool a bit—hot oil can burn you.
- ⚠️ Use wheel chocks and keep the shifter in Park.
- ⚠️ Wipe spills immediately—oil on tires/brakes is dangerous.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (2-ton minimum pair)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (at least 8-quart)
- Funnel
- Shop towels
- 3/8" drive ratchet
- 6" extension (3/8" drive)
- 8mm socket
- Torx T25 driver
- 17mm socket
- Torque wrench (10-60 Nm range)
- 86mm 16-flute oil filter cap socket
- Trim clip removal tool
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (SAE 5W-30 full synthetic, BMW Longlife-01 approved) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Oil filter kit (cartridge + new O-rings) - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
- Brake cleaner spray - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface, turn the engine off, and set the parking brake.
- Warm the engine for 3–5 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Open the hood and loosen the oil filler cap (do not remove it yet). This helps the oil drain smoothly.
- Gather a drain pan, shop towels, and your new filter/O-rings so you’re not searching mid-job.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front of your X3
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Lift the front with a floor jack at the front center jack point.
- Set the vehicle down onto jack stands at the left/right front support points.
- Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
Step 2: Remove the lower engine splash shield
- Use an 8mm socket and Torx T25 driver to remove the fasteners.
- If your shield uses plastic push-clips, pop them out with a trim clip removal tool (this tool is a small pry tool made to remove plastic clips without breaking them).
- Set the shield and hardware aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 17mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish by hand.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5–10 minutes).
- Clean the drain plug, install a new crush washer, then reinstall the plug by hand.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Replace the oil filter (top of engine)
- Move your drain pan under the engine bay area if needed (a little oil can spill).
- Use the 86mm 16-flute oil filter cap socket and a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the oil filter housing cap.
- Pull the cap and old filter element out together.
- Remove the old filter from the cap (it usually pulls off firmly).
- Replace the O-ring(s) from the filter kit on the cap (use a shop towel and your fingers; don’t scratch the cap).
- Lightly coat the new O-ring(s) with fresh oil (finger-dip in new oil). Helps prevent pinching.
- Snap the new filter onto the cap, then reinstall the cap into the housing by hand first.
- Tighten the filter cap with a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Reinstall the splash shield
- Reposition the shield.
- Reinstall all fasteners using the 8mm socket and Torx T25 driver.
- Make sure no edges are hanging down (they can catch air and rip off).
Step 6: Add new engine oil
- Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Insert a funnel into the oil filler opening.
- Add about 5.0 quarts first (don’t dump all 6 in right away).
- Reinstall the oil filler cap snugly by hand.
Step 7: Start, check for leaks, then verify the electronic oil level
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Turn the engine off and look underneath for leaks around the drain plug area.
- Wipe any oily areas with shop towels and use brake cleaner spray if needed.
- To check oil level (BMW electronic measurement), follow: iDrive > Vehicle Info > Vehicle Status > Measure engine oil level.
- Top off in small amounts (about 0.25 quart at a time) until it reads OK.
- Do not overfill—overfilling can damage the catalytic converter.
Step 8: Reset the oil service reminder
- With the vehicle on (ignition on, engine off), press and hold the trip odometer reset button until the service menu appears.
- Use short presses to scroll to the engine oil item.
- Press and hold to reset, then confirm when prompted.
✅ After Repair
- Recheck underneath after your first short drive for any fresh drips.
- Confirm the service reminder is reset and the oil level reads OK in iDrive.
- Dispose of used oil and the filter at an oil recycling center/auto parts store (never pour it on the ground).
