š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (5W-30) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- Open the hood and loosen/remove the oil fill cap by hand (this helps it drain smoothly).
- If you need more room, drive onto ramps or lift the front with a floor jack and place jack stands under the frame.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Position the drain pan
- Slide the oil drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil pan drain plug.
- The drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan.
Step 2: Drain the old engine oil
- Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Keep slight inward pressure on the plug while unthreading, then pull it away quickly to reduce splashing.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
Step 3: Reinstall and torque the drain plug
- Wipe the drain plug and the oil pan sealing surface using shop rags.
- Thread the plug in by hand first (this prevents cross-threading).
- Use a 3/8" drive torque wrench to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 4: Remove the old oil filter
- Move the oil drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the oil filter area (some oil will spill).
- Use an oil filter wrench (cap style 76mm 14-flute) to loosen the oil filter, then spin it off by hand.
- Oil filter wrench = tool that grips the filter.
- Make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter (it should not stick to the engine).
Step 5: Install the new oil filter
- Use a finger (with nitrile gloves) to put a thin film of fresh 5W-30 engine oil on the new filterās rubber gasket.
- Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface.
- Tighten by hand an additional 3/4 turn (do not use the wrench to tighten).
Step 6: Refill the engine with new oil
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill opening.
- Pour in 5W-30 engine oil (start with about 5.5 quarts).
- Reinstall the oil fill cap by hand.
Step 7: Start engine and check for leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 2 minutes.
- Look underneath with safety glasses on and check for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
Step 8: Set the oil level on the dipstick
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it with shop rags, reinsert fully, then pull again to read.
- Add oil as needed using the funnel until it reaches the full mark (total is typically about 6 quarts with filter).
- Donāt overfill.
Step 9: Reset the oil life reminder
- Method A (most WT trucks): Turn key to ON (engine off), then fully press and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds.
- Method B (if your cluster has an oil life display): Use the steering wheel buttons to navigate to oil life, then press/hold the check/clear button until it resets.
ā After Repair
- Recheck the dipstick after a short 5-10 minute drive and top off if needed.
- Make sure there are no drips under the truck the next morning.
- Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts waste oil.
