How to Change Engine Oil & Oil Filter on a 2006-2022 Honda Insight (0W-20) (Engine: Inline 4 1.5L)
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts, oil capacity, drain plug torque spec, and oil life reset for 2006
🔧 Insight - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter, then refill with the correct oil. This keeps your Insight’s engine lubricated and helps prevent wear and sludge buildup.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine if you’re new—hot oil can burn you.
- ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep the vehicle OFF (not in READY). Keep the key/fob away so the hybrid system can’t wake up unexpectedly.
- ⚠️ Use wheel chocks and set the parking brake before lifting the front.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; oil is messy and can irritate skin.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- Shop rags
- 10mm socket

- 17mm socket
- Oil filter wrench (band-style)
- Flat trim clip tool
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 4 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, turn the car OFF, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Let the engine cool 20-30 minutes if you’re not comfortable working around hot parts.
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap (this helps it drain faster).
- Plan your refill amount: your Insight takes about 3.7 US qt (3.5 L) with filter. Start slightly low, then top off.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front of the car
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Use a floor jack to lift the front at the approved front jack point.
- Set the car down onto jack stands at the approved support points and give the car a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
Step 2: Remove the lower access cover (undertray access)
- Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to remove the bolts holding the small oil-service access panel (if equipped).
- Use a flat trim clip tool to pop any plastic clips (if equipped). Pry the center pin first.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Position the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 17mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new oil drain plug crush washer.
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 3/8" drive torque wrench with a 17mm socket and Torque to 39 N·m (29 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the area clean with shop rags.
Step 5: Remove and replace the oil filter
- Move the drain pan
- Use an oil filter wrench (band-style) to loosen the old filter, then spin it off by hand (gloved).
- Confirm the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter (it should not stay stuck on the engine).
- Put a thin film of new oil on the new filter’s rubber gasket.
- Install the new filter by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten an additional 3/4 turn by hand. Hand-tight is usually correct.
Step 6: Reinstall the access cover
- Reinstall the access panel using the 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Snug the fasteners—do not over-tighten small bolts into plastic.
Step 7: Refill with new oil
- Lower the car off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Insert a funnel into the oil fill hole.
- Pour in about 3.5 US qt of 0W-20 full synthetic, then reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 8: Start, check for leaks, and set the oil level
- Turn the car on and let it run 30-60 seconds, then turn it OFF.
- Check underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- Wait 3-5 minutes, then check the dipstick.
- Top off slowly until the oil level is at the upper mark (don’t overfill). Use the funnel and pour a little at a time.
Step 9: Reset the Maintenance Minder (oil life)
- Touchscreen path (common): Use the screen: Home > Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance Info > Reset.
- Gauge/steering-wheel path (if shown in cluster): Use the steering wheel buttons to open Maintenance, select Oil Life, then hold to Reset.
âś… After Repair
- Recheck for leaks after a short 5-10 minute drive.
- Recheck the dipstick level on level ground and top off if needed.
- Pour used oil into a sealed container and take it (and the old filter) to an oil recycling drop-off.
- If you notice oil smell or drips, stop and re-check the drain plug and filter tightness.
