🔧 Passat - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Change
You’ll drain the old engine oil, replace the oil filter cartridge and seals, then refill with the correct VW-spec oil. This keeps internal engine parts lubricated and prevents sludge and premature wear.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Let the engine cool 20-30 minutes to avoid burns from hot oil and exhaust parts.
- 🛑 Support the car with jack stands on solid ground; never rely on a jack alone.
- 🛑 Wear gloves and safety glasses; used engine oil is dirty and can irritate skin.
- 🛑 Keep oil off belts and rubber hoses; wipe spills immediately.
- 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (VW 502.00 approved, typically 5W-40 full synthetic) - Qty: 7 quarts
- Oil filter cartridge kit (includes new O-rings) - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- 🧰 Warm the engine 2-3 minutes, then shut it off. Warm oil drains faster.
- 🛠️ Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap to help the oil drain quicker.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the front of the car safely
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Use a floor jack at the front center jack point and raise the car.
- Set the car onto jack stands at the proper pinch-weld/support points and gently shake the car to confirm it’s stable.
Step 2: Remove the lower engine cover (belly pan)
- Position the drain pan under the engine area.
- Use a Torx T25 bit socket and/or Torx T30 bit socket with a ratchet to remove the belly pan fasteners.
- Set the belly pan and screws aside in a small “pile” so nothing gets lost.
Step 3: Drain the engine oil
- Move the drain pan directly under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 19mm socket with a ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
- Finish removing the plug by hand and let the oil drain fully (usually 5-10 minutes).
- Remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and install the new one.
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the area clean with shop rags so you can spot leaks later.
Step 5: Replace the oil filter cartridge (top of engine)
- Under the hood, locate the oil filter housing cap (plastic cap on the oil filter housing).
- Use a 36mm socket with a ratchet to loosen the cap slowly. Go slow to avoid spills.
- Lift the cap and old filter cartridge out together, then pull the old filter off the cap.
- Use a small pick tool to remove the old O-ring(s) from the cap. (A pick is a small hooked tool used to lift seals out of grooves.)
- Install the new O-ring(s) from the filter kit onto the cap in the same groove(s).
- Push the new filter cartridge onto the cap until it seats firmly.
- Reinstall the cap by hand, then use a torque wrench and 36mm socket: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Reinstall the belly pan
- Hold the belly pan in place and start all screws by hand.
- Use the Torx T25 bit socket and/or Torx T30 bit socket with a ratchet to snug the fasteners.
Step 7: Refill with fresh oil
- Place a funnel in the oil fill opening.
- Pour in 6.0 quarts first of VW 502.00 approved 5W-40 full synthetic.
- Reinstall the oil filler cap, then start the engine and let it idle 30-60 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and top off as needed (most end up around ~6.3 quarts total with filter).
- Wipe any spilled oil with shop rags.
Step 8: Lower the car
- Use the floor jack to lift slightly, remove the jack stands, then lower the car.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 With the engine running, look underneath for any drip at the drain plug and check around the oil filter housing for seepage.
- 🧪 Recheck the oil level after a short 5-10 minute drive and top off if needed.
- 🗑️ Take used oil and the old filter to an oil recycling drop-off. Most parts stores accept it.
- 🛠️ Reset the oil service reminder (use the option that matches your setup):
- Option A (cluster method): Turn ignition OFF. Press and hold the 0.0/SET button. Turn ignition ON (do not start). Release the button, then confirm reset using the steering wheel OK button when prompted.
- Option B (infotainment method): CAR > Setup > Service > Reset oil change interval
