How to Change Engine Oil & Filter on a 2018 Toyota RAV4 2.5L
Step-by-step DIY oil and filter service with tools, parts list, torque specs, and safety tips

🔧 RAV4 - Engine Oil & Filter Change
You’ll drain the old oil, install a new oil filter, and refill with fresh oil. This keeps your engine protected and running smoothly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Always support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely only on a floor jack.
- 🔥 Let the engine cool until it’s warm to the touch, not hot, to avoid burns.
- 🧯 Keep the area well ventilated and away from open flames; engine oil is flammable.
- 🧤 Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect from hot oil splashes.
- 🧩 The RAV4 has an engine under cover; you’ll remove a few bolts and clips to reach the drain plug and filter.
- 🔌 Battery disconnection is not required for this job.
- ♻️ Plan ahead where you will take used oil and the old filter for recycling.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park the RAV4 on level ground, set the parking brake, and put the transmission in P (Park).
- 🧊 Start the engine for 3–5 minutes, then shut it off so the oil is warm but not too hot. Warm oil drains faster.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 🧼 Lay cardboard or an old sheet under the front to catch any spills.
- 📦 Verify you have the correct oil, filter, and new gaskets/O-rings before lifting the vehicle.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and Support the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack (3-ton) on the front center jacking point (under the front subframe) to raise the front of the RAV4.
- Place jack stands (3-ton) under the left and right front pinch welds (just behind the front wheels).
- Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Gently rock the RAV4 by hand to confirm it’s stable on the stands.
Step 2: Remove the Engine Under Cover
- Slide under the front of the RAV4 with a 10mm socket and ratchet.
- Remove the 10mm bolts holding the front engine under cover.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover or flathead screwdriver to pop out the plastic clips.
- Lower the cover and set it aside. Note bolt and clip positions.
Step 3: Position the Drain Pan
- Locate the oil pan at the bottom of the engine and find the drain plug (rear side of the pan).
- Place the oil drain pan under the drain plug, slightly offset toward the rear (the oil will shoot out at an angle).
Step 4: Remove the Drain Plug and Drain the Oil
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to carefully loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
- Finish removing the plug by hand and let the oil drain completely into the drain pan.
- Inspect the drain plug and remove the old crush washer (gasket) using needle nose pliers if it’s stuck.
- Wipe the oil pan sealing surface clean with a shop rag.
Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug with New Gasket
- Install the new drain plug gasket onto the drain plug.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the plug to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- Wipe off any oil around the drain plug with a shop rag.
Step 6: Drain the Oil Filter Housing
- Locate the oil filter housing at the front bottom of the engine (a round plastic/metal cap).
- On the center of the housing, there is a small plug. Use the 3/8" ratchet or appropriate small bit with the ratchet to loosen and remove this center plug.
- Insert the small plastic drain tool that comes with the new filter into the center hole to drain the housing into the drain pan.
- When oil finishes draining, remove the drain tool and set it aside.
Step 7: Remove the Oil Filter Housing
- Place the 64mm 14-flute oil filter cap socket over the oil filter housing.
- Use the 3/8" ratchet to loosen the housing counterclockwise.
- Spin the housing off by hand and carefully lower it into the drain pan to catch remaining oil.
- Pull the old filter cartridge out of the housing and discard it.
Step 8: Replace O-Rings and Install New Filter
- Use needle nose pliers or a small flathead to gently remove the large O-ring from the housing and the small O-ring from the center plug.
- Install the new large O-ring and small O-ring from the filter kit, placing them in the same grooves as the old ones.
- Lightly coat both new O-rings with a bit of fresh engine oil using your finger. This helps sealing.
- Push the new filter cartridge into the housing until it seats fully.
Step 9: Reinstall the Oil Filter Housing
- Clean the oil filter housing mounting surface on the engine with a shop rag.
- Thread the loaded oil filter housing back onto the engine by hand, making sure it is not cross-threaded.
- Use the 64mm 14-flute oil filter cap socket and torque wrench to tighten the housing to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall the small center plug using the 3/8" ratchet and tighten it snugly to about 13 Nm (10 ft-lbs).
- Spray a little brake cleaner on the housing area and wipe clean to help spot leaks later.
Step 10: Reinstall the Engine Under Cover
- Lift the engine under cover back into place.
- Reinstall the plastic clips by hand or using the plastic trim clip remover to push them fully in.
- Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to install and snug the bolts. Do not overtighten.
Step 11: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack to raise the front slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower the RAV4 fully to the ground using the floor jack.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 12: Add New Engine Oil
- Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine by hand.
- Place the funnel in the oil fill opening.
- Pour in about 4.3 quarts (4.1 liters) of 0W-20 oil to start.
- Reinstall the oil filler cap by hand and tighten snugly.
Step 13: Start Engine and Check for Leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Look under the front of the RAV4 for any leaks at the drain plug and oil filter housing.
- If you see leaks, shut the engine off and carefully retighten the leaking part using the correct socket and torque wrench.
- Shut the engine off and wait 3–5 minutes for the oil to settle.
Step 14: Check and Adjust Oil Level
- Pull out the engine oil dipstick, wipe it clean with a shop rag, and reinsert it fully.
- Pull it out again and check the oil level. It should be between the low and full marks, close to full.
- If needed, use the funnel to add oil in small amounts (about 0.1–0.2 quarts) until the level is just below the full mark.
- Total capacity with filter is about 4.6 quarts (4.4 liters), but always go by the dipstick.
Step 15: Reset Maintenance Reminder (if displayed)
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine off).
- Use the steering wheel buttons to go to the settings/gear icon on the multi-information display.
- Scroll to “Maintenance Reset” or similar, select it, and confirm reset.
- If your display is different, the general path is: Meter Settings > Scheduled Maintenance > Reset.
✅ After Repair
- 🧪 Recheck the area under the RAV4 after a short drive for any fresh oil leaks.
- 🧾 Verify the oil level again with the dipstick after the drive and top up slightly if needed.
- ♻️ Pour the used oil from the drain pan into sealed containers and take it, along with the old filter, to an authorized oil recycling center or local shop.
- 🧹 Wipe off any spilled oil in the engine bay and on the under cover to avoid burning smells.
