🔧 Equinox - Engine Oil & Filter Change

You’ll be draining the old engine oil, replacing the oil filter, and refilling with fresh oil in your Equinox. This keeps the engine lubricated, reduces wear, and helps prevent expensive damage.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Always support the vehicle with jack stands; never rely only on a floor jack.
  • 🛑 Work on a cool engine; hot oil and parts can burn your skin.
  • 🛑 Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect from hot oil and debris.
  • 🛑 Keep tools and hands away from the radiator fan; it can start even with engine off.
  • 🛑 Clean up any spilled oil immediately; it is very slippery.
  • 🛑 Dispose of used oil and filter properly at a recycling center or service shop.
  • 🛑 Battery disconnection is not required for this job.

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🧱 Engine oil (dexos1 5W-30 synthetic) - Qty: 5 quarts
  • 🧱 Engine oil filter cartridge (2.4L) - Qty: 1
  • 🧱 Oil filter cap O-ring - Qty: 1
  • 🧱 Oil drain plug gasket (crush washer, if equipped) - Qty: 1
  • 🧱 Shop towels - Qty: 1 pack
  • 🧱 Brake cleaner or degreaser spray - Qty: 1 (for cleaning spilled oil)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • đźš— Park the Equinox on level ground, engage the parking brake, and put the transmission in PARK.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool for at least 20–30 minutes if it was running; warm oil flows better, but it should not be too hot.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so the vehicle cannot roll.
  • đź“„ Confirm your oil type: your Equinox 2.4L uses dexos1-approved 5W-30.
  • đź“„ Check you have at least 5 quarts of oil and the correct cartridge filter for the 2.4L engine.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Safely raise and support the front of the Equinox

  • Position the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front subframe or center jacking point recommended for your Equinox (usually behind the front bumper, on the crossmember).
  • Slowly pump the jack to lift the front of the vehicle high enough to work comfortably underneath.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum, Qty: 2) under the reinforced pinch welds or frame rails on both sides, then gently lower the vehicle onto the stands with the floor jack.
  • Lightly shake the vehicle to ensure it is stable on the stands.
  • Never crawl under a vehicle supported only by a jack.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Slide the oil drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity) nearby but not under the drain plug yet.
  • If your Equinox has a plastic under-engine cover, use the flathead screwdriver to remove any plastic clips and use the 3/8" drive ratchet with the correct socket (if bolts are present) to remove them.
  • Set the shield aside in a clean area.
  • Keep track of all clips and screws.

Step 3: Locate the drain plug and oil filter areas

  • From under the front of the Equinox, find the engine oil pan; it is the metal pan at the bottom of the engine.
  • The drain plug is a single bolt at the lowest part of the oil pan; you’ll use a 15mm socket to remove it.
  • The oil filter on the 2.4L is a cartridge type in a black plastic or aluminum housing on top of the engine, not under the car.
  • Locating parts first makes the job smoother.

Step 4: Drain the old engine oil

  • Position the oil drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity) under the drain plug, slightly toward the rear, since oil will shoot out horizontally at first.
  • Use the 15mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to carefully loosen the drain plug counterclockwise.
  • Finish unscrewing the plug by hand while pushing it inward until you’re ready, then pull it away quickly so it falls into the pan or your hand.
  • Let the oil drain completely; this can take 5–10 minutes.
  • Inspect the drain plug threads and replace the oil drain plug gasket (crush washer, if equipped) if it looks flattened or damaged.

Step 5: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Once oil has slowed to an occasional drip, wipe the drain area clean with shop rags or paper towels.
  • Thread the drain plug back in by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 15mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet to snug the plug.
  • Then use the 3/8" drive torque wrench (5-75 ft-lbs range) with the 15mm socket to tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten; the oil pan can crack.

Step 6: Remove the old oil filter cartridge

  • Lower the vehicle slightly if needed so you can comfortably reach the top of the engine, or carefully climb out from under while it stays on stands.
  • Open the hood and locate the oil filter housing; it is a round canister with a hex on top, usually toward the front or top of the engine.
  • Place a few shop rags or paper towels around the base of the housing to catch drips.
  • Use the 32mm socket, socket extension (3"-6"), and 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the filter housing cap counterclockwise.
  • Lift the cap straight up; the old filter cartridge will usually come out attached to the cap.
  • Pull the old filter off the cap by hand and discard it into the oil drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity).

Step 7: Replace the filter cap O-ring and install new filter

  • On the filter cap, find the rubber O-ring near the threads; carefully pry it off with your fingers or the rounded end of the flathead screwdriver (do not scratch the cap).
  • Wipe the O-ring groove clean with shop rags or paper towels.
  • Install the new oil filter cap O-ring in the same groove, making sure it is not twisted.
  • Dip a finger into some fresh engine oil and lightly coat the new O-ring; this helps sealing and prevents it from tearing.
  • Press the new engine oil filter cartridge (2.4L) onto the filter cap stem until it clicks or seats firmly.

Step 8: Reinstall the filter housing cap

  • Carefully lower the cap with new filter back into the housing, making sure the filter sits straight and does not pinch the O-ring.
  • Thread the cap in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 32mm socket, socket extension (3"-6"), and 3/8" drive ratchet to snug the cap.
  • Then use the 3/8" drive torque wrench (5-75 ft-lbs range) with the 32mm socket to tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Wipe away any spilled oil with shop rags or paper towels.

Step 9: Reinstall the lower splash shield

  • If you removed an under-engine cover, position it back in place.
  • Use the flathead screwdriver to reinstall plastic clips and use the 3/8" drive ratchet with the proper socket to reinstall bolts.
  • Do not overtighten plastic fasteners.

Step 10: Lower the vehicle back to the ground

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of the Equinox slightly off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum, Qty: 2).
  • Remove the jack stands and slowly lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

Step 11: Add new engine oil

  • Open the hood and locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine; it is usually marked “Engine Oil” or has an oil can symbol.
  • Remove the oil cap by turning it counterclockwise.
  • Place the funnel (medium size) in the filler opening.
  • Pour in about 4.5 quarts of engine oil (dexos1 5W-30 synthetic) to start.
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap by turning it clockwise until snug.

Step 12: Start engine and check for leaks

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
  • Look under the vehicle around the drain plug and around the oil filter housing on top to check for any leaks.
  • If you see drips, shut the engine off and snug the leaking part using the correct socket and 3/8" drive ratchet, then recheck.
  • Turn off the engine and wait 5 minutes so the oil can drain back to the oil pan.

Step 13: Check and adjust oil level

  • Pull out the engine oil dipstick, wipe it clean with shop rags or paper towels, then reinsert and pull it again.
  • The oil level should be between the “MIN” and “MAX” marks, ideally near the “MAX”.
  • If it is low, remove the oil cap again and add oil through the funnel (medium size) in small amounts (about 0.25 quart at a time), rechecking the dipstick each time.
  • You will typically use about 5 quarts total including the filter change.

Step 14: Reset the oil life monitor

  • Turn the ignition to ON (engine can be off) so the dash lights are on.
  • Use the steering wheel buttons to navigate the Driver Information Center:
    • Press the Menu button until you are in the Vehicle Information menu.
    • Scroll to Remaining Oil Life.
    • Press and hold the SET/CLR button until the display shows 100%.
  • Alternative method if needed: with ignition ON (engine off), fully press the accelerator pedal to the floor and release it three times within 5 seconds; the oil life should reset.
  • Check your dash to confirm oil life is at 100%.

Step 15: Clean up and dispose of used oil

  • Pour the used oil from the oil drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity) into the empty oil containers or a sealed container using the funnel (medium size).
  • Wipe any spilled oil from the engine and underbody using shop rags or paper towels; use brake cleaner or degreaser spray if needed.
  • Take the used oil and old filter to an auto parts store or recycling center that accepts used oil.

âś… After Repair

  • 🧪 After driving for 5–10 minutes, park on level ground and recheck the oil level with the dipstick; top off if needed.
  • 🧪 Look underneath for any fresh oil spots after your first drive.
  • 🧪 Confirm the dash shows correct Remaining Oil Life after reset.
  • 🧪 Note your mileage and date so you know when the next oil change is due.
