🔧 Murano - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
This service drains the old engine oil, replaces the oil filter, and refills with fresh oil at the correct level. Clean oil protects your engine from wear and helps it run cooler and smoother.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support your Murano with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be very hot; let the engine cool 15-30 minutes to avoid burns.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; oil can irritate skin and eyes.
- ⚠️ Keep oil off belts and exhaust parts to prevent smoke and odor.
- ✅ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Engine oil filter - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- 🔥 Warm the engine for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off and let it cool 15-30 minutes.
- 📦 Gather your oil, filter, and new crush washer so you’re not crawling in and out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and support the front
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front at the proper front jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
- Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable.
Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield (undercover)
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the bolts.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic clips.
- Set all hardware aside so nothing gets lost.
Step 3: Drain the old engine oil
- Place the drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity) under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the drain plug, then finish unthreading by hand.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 5-10 minutes).
- Remove the old washer and install the new oil drain plug crush washer (a crush washer is a soft metal ring that seals when tightened).
- Reinstall the drain plug by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) to tighten: Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
- Wipe the area clean before moving on.
Step 4: Remove and replace the oil filter
- Move the drain pan (at least 8-quart capacity) under the oil filter area (it will spill when removed).
- Use the oil filter cap wrench 65mm 14-flute (specialty) with a 3/8" ratchet to loosen the oil filter (a cap wrench fits over the end of the filter for better grip).
- Spin the filter off by hand, keeping it upright as you remove it.
- Use shop rags to clean the sealing surface where the filter gasket touches.
- Put a light wipe of fresh engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) on the new filter’s rubber gasket.
- Install the new filter by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten an additional 2/3 turn by hand.
Step 5: Reinstall the splash shield
- Reposition the shield and install clips first using the trim clip removal tool (reverse of removal).
- Install bolts using the 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
Step 6: Lower the vehicle
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift slightly, remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then lower the vehicle.
- Remove wheel chocks last.
Step 7: Refill with fresh oil and verify the level
- Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap.
- Insert a funnel and add 5.1 quarts of engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) to start.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds, then shut it off.
- Wait 5 minutes, then check the dipstick and add oil in small amounts until it reaches the full mark.
- Use shop rags to wipe any spilled oil.
Step 8: Reset the oil maintenance reminder (if it’s on)
- Using the steering wheel buttons, go to: Settings > Maintenance > Oil and Filter > Reset.
- If your menu wording is different, look for Maintenance and reset the Oil item.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 With the engine running, look under the vehicle for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter.
- 🧯 If you see dripping, shut the engine off and recheck tightness (do not overtighten the filter).
- 🧾 Recheck the dipstick again after your first short drive.
- ♻️ Pour used oil into sealed containers and take it to an oil recycling location (many parts stores accept it).
