🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Oil Change

On your Silverado, this service replaces the old engine oil and filter so the 6.2L V8 keeps proper lubrication and oil pressure. Do this with the engine warm, then refill with the correct amount and reset the oil life monitor.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Hot oil can burn you. Let the engine cool enough to work safely, but keep it warm for faster draining.
  • Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels before lifting the truck.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • Keep oil away from belts, exhaust parts, and the starter area.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for your Silverado)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 15mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Torque wrench
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 dexos1 full synthetic) - Qty: 8 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug sealing washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Run the engine 3-5 minutes, then shut it off.
  • Let it sit a few minutes so the oil drains without being dangerously hot.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and secure the truck

  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of your Silverado at the proper lift points.
  • Place jack stands under the frame and lower the truck onto them.
  • Keep the truck stable before going underneath.

Step 2: Remove the engine oil fill cap

  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap by hand.
  • This helps the oil drain faster.

Step 3: Drain the old oil

  • Position the oil drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain completely.
  • Replace the drain plug sealing washer if needed.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter area.
  • Use an oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old oil filter.
  • Make sure the old filter gasket comes off with the filter.
  • Wipe the filter mounting surface clean with a shop towel.
  • Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
  • Install the new oil filter by hand until snug, then tighten per the filter instructions.
  • Do not overtighten the filter.

Step 5: Add new engine oil

  • Lower the truck back to level ground for an accurate oil level check.
  • Use a funnel to add about 7.5 quarts of oil first.
  • Start the engine and let it idle 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut it off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Check the dipstick and add oil slowly until the level reaches the full mark.

Step 6: Check for leaks

  • Look under the truck for drips at the drain plug and oil filter.
  • If you see a leak, shut the engine off and correct it before driving.

Step 7: Reset the oil life monitor

  • Use the steering wheel controls to bring up the Oil Life screen in the driver information center.
  • Press and hold the check mark / set-reset button until it resets to 100%.
  • Reset only after the oil change is done.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and verify the oil pressure warning light goes out quickly.
  • Check the oil level again after a short drive and top off if needed.
  • Recheck for leaks around the drain plug and filter.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter at a recycling center or auto parts store.
