🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Replacement

Changing the oil and filter keeps the engine clean and helps the turbo engine stay protected. This job is straightforward if you can safely lift the vehicle and keep everything clean while draining and refilling.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a cool engine. Hot oil and exhaust parts can burn you.
  • Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Keep the old oil away from belts, hoses, and the alternator.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 17mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (full synthetic, 5W-30) - Qty: 6 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground.
  • Let the engine cool fully.
  • Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands.
  • Have the new filter ready before draining.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the oil fill cap and prepare the drain pan

  • Remove the engine oil fill cap by hand.
  • Place the drain pan under the oil drain plug.
  • Make sure the pan is centered before loosening anything.

Step 2: Drain the engine oil

  • Use a 17mm socket and ratchet to remove the oil drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain fully. This usually takes several minutes.
  • Inspect the drain plug and replace the crush washer.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter area.
  • Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter.
  • Spin the filter off by hand once it is loose.
  • Keep the filter upright to avoid spilling oil.

Step 4: Install the new oil filter

  • Wipe the filter mounting surface clean with a shop towel.
  • Lightly oil the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
  • Spin the new filter on by hand until the gasket touches.
  • Tighten the filter by hand about 3/4 turn more.
  • Do not use a wrench to overtighten the new filter.

Step 5: Refill with fresh engine oil

  • Use a funnel and add about 5.5 quarts first.
  • Install the oil fill cap.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for oil to settle.

Step 6: Check the oil level

  • Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, then check again.
  • Add oil in small amounts until the level is at the full mark.
  • Total capacity is typically about 6 quarts with filter.

Step 7: Inspect for leaks

  • Look under the vehicle at the drain plug and filter.
  • If you see any drips, stop the engine and correct the issue.
  • Recheck the oil level one more time after the test run.

✅ After Repair

  • Reset the oil service reminder in the cluster or infotainment if equipped.
  • Check the oil level again after your first drive.
  • Verify there are no leaks over the next few trips.
  • Record the mileage and date for your maintenance log.
