🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Oil Change

Changing the oil and filter on your Rogue keeps the engine clean and protected. This service is straightforward, but you need to safely lift the vehicle and drain the oil fully before refilling with the correct oil type and amount.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and set the parking brake before starting.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the vehicle. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • Oil will be hot if the engine was recently running. Let it cool before draining.
  • Keep dirt out of the engine oil fill and filter area.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench or cap wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for vehicle weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 4.9 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug crush washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and let the engine cool if it was recently run.
  • Gather all tools and parts before lifting the vehicle.
  • Put wheel chocks behind the rear wheels if the front of the vehicle will be raised.
  • Have the new filter ready before draining the oil.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
  • Support it with jack stands before getting underneath.
  • Make sure the vehicle is stable before continuing.

Step 2: Remove the oil fill cap and prepare the drain pan

  • Use your hand to remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
  • Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • This helps the oil drain faster and cleaner.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain completely into the pan.
  • Install a new drain plug crush washer on the drain plug.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the oil filter

  • Use the oil filter wrench or cap wrench to loosen and remove the oil filter.
  • Check that the old filter gasket came off with the filter.
  • Wipe the filter mounting surface clean with a shop towel.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
  • Spin the new oil filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the base.
  • Tighten it by hand an additional 3/4 turn.
  • Do not use a wrench to overtighten the filter.

Step 6: Refill the engine with oil

  • Use a funnel to add engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) through the fill opening.
  • Add about 4.5 quarts first, then top off after checking the level.
  • Install the oil fill cap.

Step 7: Check for leaks and verify the level

  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait a few minutes for oil to settle.
  • Use the dipstick to check the oil level and add oil as needed to reach the full mark.
  • Inspect the drain plug and filter for leaks.

✅ After Repair

  • Recheck the oil level after a short drive.
  • Make sure there are no oil spots under the vehicle.
  • Reset the maintenance reminder if your display shows one.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter at a recycling center or parts store.
