- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool so the oil is warm, not hot.
- Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands.
- Keep the oil fill cap loose only when you are ready to drain or refill.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap
- Use your hand to remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
- This helps oil drain faster and smoother.
Step 2: Lift and secure the front of the vehicle
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise the front.
- Set the vehicle on jack stands before going underneath.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
Step 3: Remove the lower engine splash shield
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the splash shield fasteners.
- Set the shield and hardware aside in order.
Step 4: Drain the engine oil
- Place a drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 14mm socket to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain completely.
- Install a new oil drain plug crush washer.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Remove the oil filter housing cap
- Use a 36mm oil filter socket and ratchet to loosen the filter housing cap.
- Lift the cap out carefully so oil does not spill.
- Remove the old cartridge filter from the cap.
Step 6: Replace the oil filter
- Install the new oil filter cartridge onto the cap.
- Replace the O-rings on the cap if they come with the filter kit.
- Lightly oil the new O-rings before installation. Do not install them dry.
- Reinstall the filter housing cap and Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield
- Use the 14mm socket to reinstall the lower engine cover.
- Make sure all clips and fasteners are seated properly.
Step 8: Refill with new engine oil
- Use a funnel to add about 6.5 quarts of fresh engine oil first.
- Install the oil fill cap.
- Start the engine and let it idle for about 30 seconds.
- Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
- Check the dipstick or electronic oil level and top off as needed to the full mark.
Step 9: Check for leaks
- Look under the vehicle for oil leaks at the drain plug and filter housing.
- Wipe any spilled oil from the engine and underbody.

- Check the drain plug and filter area for seepage.
- Reset the service reminder in the dash if it is due.
