🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Oil Change

Change the oil and filter on your Jetta to keep the turbo engine lubricated and clean. This service helps protect the timing components, turbocharger, and valve train from wear and sludge.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine fully cool so you do not burn yourself on the oil pan, exhaust, or oil filter housing.
  • Support the car securely on jack stands before going underneath it. Never rely on the jack alone.
  • Use gloves and safety glasses. Used oil is messy and can splash when the drain plug comes out.
  • Keep the car level when checking the final oil level.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 16mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench or oil filter cap socket
  • Drain pan
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Funnel
  • Shop rags
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Oil filter cartridge - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter housing O-ring - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Let the engine cool completely before draining the oil.
  • Have a drain pan ready before you remove the drain plug.
  • Tip: Open the hood first so air can enter while draining.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the car

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of the car at the proper lift point.
  • Set the car on jack stands and verify it is stable before going underneath.
  • Remove the lower engine splash shield fasteners if equipped.

Step 2: Drain the old oil

  • Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use the 16mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain completely.
  • Install a new drain plug washer on the plug.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
  • Tip: Start the plug by hand to avoid cross-threading.

Step 3: Replace the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the oil filter housing.
  • Use the oil filter wrench or oil filter cap socket to remove the oil filter housing cap.
  • Pull out the old filter cartridge.
  • Remove the old O-ring from the cap and install the new O-ring.
  • Lubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil before installing it.
  • Install the new filter cartridge and thread the cap back in by hand.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Refill with fresh oil

  • Lower the car back to level ground.
  • Use the funnel to add about 4.3 quarts (4.1 L) of fresh engine oil to the oil fill cap.
  • Install the oil fill cap securely.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes for the oil to settle.

Step 5: Check the oil level

  • Check the dipstick and top off as needed until the level is in the safe range.
  • Do not overfill.
  • Inspect underneath for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter housing.

✅ After Repair

  • Reset the service reminder if your car has one.
  • Check the oil level again after your first short drive.
  • Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center or auto parts store.
