🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Replacement

Changing the oil and filter on your Beetle keeps the turbo engine clean and protected. Use the correct VW-approved oil and replace the cartridge-style filter at the same time so the new oil stays clean longer.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and let the engine cool enough to avoid burns, but keep it slightly warm for better oil drainage.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the car. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Keep clear of the exhaust and oil pan area; they can stay hot for a while.
  • Have a drain pan ready before removing the drain plug.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

  • 19mm socket
  • 32mm oil filter socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil drain pan

  • Oil filter cartridge - Qty: 1
  • Oil filter cap O-ring kit - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug sealing washer - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels.
  • Run the engine for 2-3 minutes so the oil flows better, then shut it off.
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap to help draining.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front of the car

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Beetle at the proper lift point.
  • Place jack stands under the car and lower it onto the stands.
  • Make sure the car is stable before getting underneath it.

Step 2: Remove the lower splash shield if equipped

  • Use the correct fastener tool for the belly pan clips or screws if your car has a lower cover.
  • Set the hardware aside in a safe place.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Place the oil drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use a 19mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain completely.
  • Install a new drain plug sealing washer.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Replace the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the filter housing.
  • Use a 32mm oil filter socket to loosen and remove the filter cap.
  • Pull out the old filter cartridge.
  • Remove the old O-ring from the cap and install the new O-ring from the kit.
  • Lightly coat the new O-ring with fresh oil.
  • Install the new filter cartridge in the cap, then reinstall the cap.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Do not over-tighten the plastic cap.

Step 5: Reinstall the splash shield

  • Put the lower cover back in place if you removed it.
  • Use the original fasteners and tighten them securely.

Step 6: Add fresh engine oil

  • Lower the car back to level ground.
  • Use a funnel to add about 5.5 quarts of the correct oil.
  • Reinstall the oil filler cap.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 30 seconds.

Step 7: Check the oil level

  • Shut the engine off and wait 5 minutes.
  • Check the oil level with the dipstick or electronic oil level display if equipped.
  • Add oil in small amounts until the level is correct.
  • Do not overfill.

✅ After Repair

  • Look underneath for leaks at the drain plug and filter housing.
  • Verify the oil level again after a short drive.
  • Reset the service reminder in the instrument cluster if needed.
