🔧 Prius V - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

Changing the engine oil and oil filter keeps the engine clean and helps protect the hybrid system’s gas engine from wear. On your Prius V, the oil filter is accessed from underneath the vehicle, so you’ll need to safely raise the front end and remove the underbody covers.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • The engine and oil can be hot. Let the vehicle cool before starting.
  • Work on level ground and support the vehicle with jack stands. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • Set the parking brake and place the transmission in Park.
  • Do not work under the vehicle unless it is safely supported.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • Oil filter wrench or cap wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Funnel
  • Shop towels
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Engine oil (0W-20 full synthetic) - Qty: 4.4 quarts
  • Oil filter - Qty: 1
  • Oil drain plug gasket - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool so the oil drains safely.
  • Gather all tools and parts before lifting the vehicle.
  • Tip: Warm oil drains faster, but it should not be hot enough to burn you.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the front of the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of the vehicle at the proper lift point.
  • Place the vehicle securely on jack stands.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Never crawl under a car supported only by a jack.

Step 2: Remove the lower engine cover

  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the fasteners holding the lower cover.
  • Set the cover and hardware aside in order.

Step 3: Drain the engine oil

  • Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  • Use the 14mm socket to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the oil drain completely.
  • Install a new oil drain plug gasket on the plug.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Remove the oil filter

  • Move the drain pan under the filter area.
  • Use the oil filter wrench or cap wrench to loosen and remove the oil filter.
  • Check that the old filter gasket came off with the filter.
  • Double-check the old gasket is not stuck.

Step 5: Install the new oil filter

  • Lightly coat the new filter gasket with clean engine oil.
  • Install the new oil filter by hand until the gasket contacts the base.
  • Tighten to the filter’s specified hand-tight plus turn, or the value on the filter if provided.
  • Do not overtighten.

Step 6: Reinstall the under cover

  • Put the lower cover back in position.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall the fasteners.
  • Make sure the cover is fully seated.

Step 7: Add new engine oil

  • Lower the vehicle back to level ground.
  • Open the oil filler cap and use a funnel to add about 4 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic.
  • Start the engine and let it run for 30-60 seconds.
  • Shut the engine off, wait a few minutes, then check the dipstick.
  • Add oil slowly until the level is near the full mark.

Step 8: Check for leaks and final level

  • Inspect the drain plug and filter for leaks.
  • Verify the oil level is correct on the dipstick.
  • Wipe any spilled oil with shop towels.

âś… After Repair

  • Check the oil level again after a short drive.
  • Look underneath for any fresh oil drips.
  • Reset the maintenance reminder if your display prompts it.
  • Dispose of used oil and filter properly at a recycling center.
