🔧 Engine Oil & Oil Filter - Oil Change
Changing the oil and filter on your Prius C helps protect the hybrid engine from wear and keeps oil pressure and flow where they should be. This service is straightforward, but clean work and correct torque matter because the oil pan and filter housing can be damaged if over-tightened.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work with the engine off and fully cooled down before draining oil.
- The underbody panels can have sharp edges; wear gloves and safety glasses.
- Do not get under the vehicle unless it is supported by jack stands on solid ground.
- The Prius C may start the engine automatically in some modes; keep the vehicle in OFF during service.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the lower access cover
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the fasteners holding the lower engine under cover, if equipped.
- Set the panel and fasteners aside in order so they go back in the same place.
- Keep the fasteners organized.
Step 2: Drain the old engine oil
- Place the oil drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use the 14mm socket to remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain completely.
- Install a new drain plug gasket on the plug.
- Reinstall the drain plug and torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Remove the old oil filter
- Move the drain pan under the filter area.
- Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the oil filter.
- Make sure the old filter seal comes off with the filter.
- Wipe the filter mounting surface clean with a shop towel.
Step 4: Install the new oil filter
- Lightly oil the rubber seal on the new oil filter with clean engine oil.
- Thread the filter on by hand until the seal contacts the base.
- Then tighten it to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs) if using a torque wrench and compatible filter setup.
- Hand-tight plus slight snug is usually enough.
Step 5: Refill with fresh oil
- Remove the oil filler cap and insert a funnel.
- Add about 4.4 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic engine oil.
- Install the filler cap.
Step 6: Start and check the oil level
- Start the vehicle and let it run for about 30 seconds.

- Make sure all clips and bolts are seated correctly.
✅ After Repair
- Check underneath for any oil leaks at the drain plug and filter.
