How to Change Engine Oil and Oil Filter on a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE350
Step-by-step DIY guide with required tools, MB 229.5 oil specs, torque specs, and electronic oil level check
🔧 GLE - Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement
On your GLE, the engine oil lubricates and cools internal parts, and the oil filter traps contaminants. Replacing both on schedule prevents engine wear and keeps oil pressure and timing components happy.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
Assumption: Oil capacity is roughly ~8 quarts with filter; final level must be set by the electronic oil level check.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the GLE with jack stands, not just a jack.
- ⚠️ Engine oil can be very hot; let the engine cool 15–30 minutes before draining.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses; oil will splash when the drain plug comes out.
- ⚠️ Do not crawl under the GLE unless the wheels are chocked and the vehicle is stable.
- ⚠️ Dispose of used oil and the filter at a recycling center/parts store—never dump it.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Engine oil (MB-Approval 229.5 full synthetic, typically 0W-40 or 5W-40) - Qty: 9 quarts
- Oil filter kit (cartridge + new O-rings) - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug crush washer/seal - Qty: 1
- Oil drain plug (optional, if damaged) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Open the hood and remove the engine cover (it pulls upward firmly).
- Have your drain pan and rags ready before loosening anything.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Warm the oil slightly
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2–3 minutes, then shut it off.
- Warm oil drains faster and removes more sludge.
Step 2: Raise and support the GLE
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of the GLE at the approved front jacking point.
- Set it down on jack stands and gently shake the vehicle to confirm it’s stable.
Step 3: Remove the front lower splash shield (as needed)
- Use a Torx T25 bit and Torx T30 bit with a ratchet to remove the fasteners holding the front underbody panel.
- Use a flat trim tool to pop any clips without breaking them.
- Set the panel and hardware aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.
Step 4: Drain the engine oil
- Place the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
- Use a 13mm socket with a ratchet to loosen and remove the drain plug.
- Let the oil drain until it slows to an occasional drip (usually 10–20 minutes).
Step 5: Replace the drain plug seal and reinstall the drain plug
- Remove the old crush washer and install the new oil drain plug crush washer/seal.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first (to avoid cross-threading).
- Use a torque wrench with a 13mm socket: Torque to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Replace the oil filter (top-mounted cartridge)
- Locate the oil filter housing at the top of the engine.
- Place rags around the housing to catch drips.
- Use a 27mm socket with a ratchet to loosen the filter cap slowly.
- Lift the cap and filter element out and let it drain into the housing for a moment.
- Pull the old filter element off the cap by hand.
- Use an oil filter O-ring pick (specialty) (a small hooked tool used to lift O-rings) to remove the old O-ring(s) from the cap.
- Install the new O-ring(s) from the filter kit, and lightly coat them with fresh oil (use a dab from your new oil bottle).
- Push the new filter element onto the cap until it seats.
- Reinstall the cap by hand first, then use a torque wrench with a 27mm socket: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the splash shield
- Reposition the underbody panel.
- Install fasteners using a Torx T25 bit and Torx T30 bit with a ratchet.
Step 8: Add new engine oil
- Lower the GLE off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Remove the oil fill cap on top of the engine.
- Use a funnel and add 7.5–8.0 quarts of MB 229.5 approved oil to start.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
Step 9: Start the engine and check for leaks
- Start the engine and let it idle for 30–60 seconds.
- Shut it off and look underneath for leaks at the drain plug area.
- Check around the oil filter housing for seepage.
Step 10: Set the final oil level using the electronic oil level check
- Wait 5 minutes with the engine off and the GLE on level ground.
- Use the steering wheel controls to open the service menu: Service > Engine Oil Level.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to measure the oil level.
- If it’s low, add oil in small amounts (about 0.25 quart at a time) using a funnel, then recheck.
- Overfilling can cause drivability issues.
✅ After Repair
- Recheck for leaks after your first 10–15 minute drive.
- Confirm the electronic oil level reads OK at normal operating temperature.
- Reset the service reminder if needed: Service > ASSYST PLUS > Full Service > Confirm Service.
- Pour used oil into a sealed container and recycle it with the old filter.
